I too have vague memories of Republicans at least pretending to care about limited government.

In general, they used to be a little closer to this line of thinking. I don't think they've ever fully embraced this philosophy, however.

After all, a variety of laws regulating personal behavior were and still are on the books. These laws were written by both Democrats and Republicans.
