He died in Uvanni, Iraq, when a mortar round struck his vehicle. Shaken by the Sept. 11 attacks, he entered the Army one month before the invasion of Iraq. "He wanted to do something for his country," his mother said. "And that's what he did." When Brangman called his mother from Fort Stewart, Ga., to tell her that he was leaving for Iraq, he said: "Always remember that I love you, mom, and my sister, too. If anything happens to me, I want you to know that I will always be your son...."
