A gay rights campaigner has accused an Imam of saying the execution of gay Muslims to stop the spread of disease is "for the common good of man".
Dr John Casson visited Arshad Misbahi, the Imam at Manchester Central Mosque, to discuss concerns over the execution of homosexual Muslims in Iran.
Dr Casson said the comments were made in a private meeting but he wrote them down afterwards.
The Imam did not deny the comments but said he had been misinterpreted.
Mr Misbahi said he was only talking about the Islamic perspective on homosexuality and stressed he would make a statement later on Thursday.
Dr Casson, a physiotherapist, said he was shocked at what had been said.
He said he set up the meeting to open dialogue with the Muslim community after reading about two gay teenagers, Mahmood Asghari and Ilyas Mahoni, who were hanged in Iran.
He decided to contact Muslim leaders to show he felt this was unacceptable.
"I would very much welcome the Imam's clarification of him telling me and the public exactly what the views of Islam are," he said.
"I would apologise if I had misunderstood what he said to me.
"I wrote down what he said to me straight after the interview."
'Demonising Muslims'
Massoud Shadjareh, from the Islamic Human Rights Commission, said this was not an issue for Muslims.
He said homosexuality was "not compatible" with Islam, just as it was not compatible with other orthodox religions, such as Catholicism.
He added: "Just one man talking to another becomes an issue, Muslims are being put under a magnifying glass.
"I think that this is part of demonising Muslims," he said.

Iran has become in a sense a "religion sponsored State", sort of like Vatican City, where the religious leaders ARE ( or at least control ) the government and set the laws and punishments, so it appears that it is.
Surely you don't believe that since God decreed that " Thou shalt not kill " our government cannot meet out judgement and punishment on murder ?
President Khatami of Iran was asked a question about the death penalty for sodomy when he was at Harvard. He defended it, and the Boston Globe ("all gay activism all the time") did not even see fit to mention this in its article on the speech. Hypocritical liberals...

Interesting, we seem to be doing a lot of "appeasing" these days regarding the gay lifestyle ... are conservatives supposed to be with our against the muslims on this one ?

There are threads here almost every day concerning pedophiles in the news. To the accompanyment of varyingly disgusted to outright gleeful calls for castration, prison rape, torture, execution, etc.
That doesn't seem to draw much criticism. Hurting one kind of pervert in the name of decency and protecting our values is A-OK there.
But the same sort of perverts call themselves gays and for some reason they're beyond punishment. We throw drug users in prison forever. But when it comes to homos, we're supposed to feel like Nazis for telling them no.

i wouldn't actually categorize their activity as whore-chasing. most of these bastards commit 'muta marriage', temporary marriage for the sake of getting off under the guise of doing it legally, but then divorcing the poor souls once they leave for home. and the majority of these girls/women who become 'muta' brides - virgins. highly sought after and much money PAID for them by "marriage" brokers. the poor girls are then pretty much discarded in their societies and relegated to more muta marriages or prostitution when there's nothing else they can do.

The Catholic faith teaches that sin separates us from God but it also teaches us that salvation is a personal journey not limited to a trip down the straight and narrow only...Catholics do not rely solely on the Bible for revelation...we have Commandments, confession, the sacrament of the Mass, and works of faith that help us to be spiritually nourished...we also are entitled to use our common sense and to pray for insight...for example we believe that a loving homosexual person may be viewed more kindly by God than a judgemental person who thinks that he/ she has the inside track of the 'going to Heaven train' and spends their lives judging others. There are 7 deadly sins--greed, gluttony, and pride are neck and neck with lust. The emphasis in Catholic teaching is on personal responsibility, virtue, and living a life like Christ did--filled with love for his fellow man. Jesus loved the sinner right up to His final breath on the Cross when He forgave St. Dismas, the good thief.
BTW Catholics are against the death penalty as well as abortion since both destroy life. 'Just' war is allowed because it is a war done in self defence--the only time the Church (albeit reluctantly) permits killing. Jesus is the embodiment of love and he is our role model. That is how He saves us--He teaches us how to live. (Sorry for the rant but Catholics are so often misunderstood that I find myself speaking up to correct the record--16 years of Catholic education as well as 10 years teaching religion in school.)
It appears that the Lamestream media is trying to appease Mad Mo's disciples by not pointing out the obvious downsides of Islam. If the "alternative lifestyle" crowd had any sense, they would side with us on the WoT. The homos would be the first blood shed in a Sharia Law society.
That's what I was thinking. Did this guy think all of the imams and other muslims were unclear as to what homosexuals would think about them hanging homosexuals? Did he think they would collectively slap their foreheads and say "Gosh, we didn't know you guys wouldn't like it. How come no one ever told us this before?"
This is not an opinion that is binding on Catholics, as opposed to being against abortion, which is binding.
