BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Iraq's Shi'ite prime minister pledged on Wednesday to crack down on illegal militias but criticized a U.S. raid on a Shi'ite militia stronghold that killed at least four people.
A day after U.S. officials assured Americans the prime minister had agreed "timelines" to help end sectarian militia violence, Nuri al-Maliki used his own news conference to dismiss talk of any "timetable" for action.

I was repulsed by Maliki's behavior when he visited the White House with George Bush at his side.
He absoulutely refused to criticize the Iranian Terror Organization Hezbellah.
Our soldier's lives and tax dollars for the benefit of Maliki?
Yes, maybe Allawi or even Chalabi need to be put back into power.
We need to clean up the city from the air, not with infantry .
That is Rumsfeld's mistake.
I've got an idea for that. ID cards, to be worn around the neck, for all males of military age. Then if you catch one without his ID, he's dead meat.
Expecting al-maliki, or any arab leader to side with Israel is more than unrealistic.
Nonetheless, its crunch time and if he dawdles regarding the militias any longer, then we get them w/o his consent and then he can ask us to leave, if he has the balls.
It's less important that they have a constitutional democracy than that the country not become a training camp for terrorists.
I wish we would put our own national interests ahead of somebody elses for a change.
And not apologize about it.

Yes, we have a MAJOR problem in that area. We are busy fighting wars for others, while our borders remain wide open, the illegal invasion of our country by who-knows-what continues, and Washington is busy working on more ways to give away the soverignty of Americans.
Washington quit working for Americans a long time ago.
YEah and he didn't shave. Looked like a bum. How do you not shave when you're going to visit the POTUS? It's like an intentional insult.
Even Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Jordan all criticized Hezbollah.
But not Maliki, he praised them.
For the life of me, I can not understand why we have not done this by now! Hearts & minds are lost. Hopefully, with GWB last 2 years & no more politics to play, we will get serious about this job & get it done. GWB, surely doesn't want to leave with this mess! Let's pray we get it done for the sake of the lives lost & injured! "Let's Roll"
That's the Arafat school of fashion . . you didn't know that?
Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Jordan hate the shia & Iran. But if you followed the story closely, it was quite obvious that they condemned Israel far more harshly.
On the other hand, if we leave Iraq unstable, it (and its oil) will fall to Iran.
Thorny problem. As long as the problem of islam is not addressed directly, the entire western world is damned if it tries to defend itself and even more damned if it doesn't.
The time for clear definition of the enemy is upon us and, with that definition, a clear strategy must be developed for confronting the problem of fundamental islam everywhere. Until fundamental islam is expunged from the world, it will, like cancer, regrow and threaten the world again. Next time, however, WMD's will be even more lethal and horrible.
Given the premise you establish, could you explain something? On what basis do you argue that replacing an anti-Iranian Ba'athist SOB with a fundamentalist pro-Iranian Shi'ite SOB has been worth all this American blood and treasure?
At some point , we may have to let the Shia and Sunnis fight it out on their own, while American troops watch from a safe distance.
Maybe then they will get it out of their system.
We can't undo 1200 years of Sunni-Shiite hatred in 3 months.
If he truly 'cracks down', we won't have to do this.
If he truly 'cracks down', we won't have to do this.
You forgot to mention that Iraqi oil was supposed to pay for all this military and infrastructure aid.
