TUESDAY, Oct. 24, 2006, 3:36 p.m. By John Diedrich Jude reacts to new charges, civil suit

On the two-year anniversary of his beating, Frank Jude Jr. said today he is glad federal charges have been filed, but that more needs to be done.

Jude filed a federal civil lawsuit against the city and former and current officers on Monday.

"Police brutality has to stop. I understand there are good cops and bad cops. There are more good cops in Milwaukee than bad cops, but I swear it cannot happen to anyone else," said Jude in a telephone interview from the Oshkosh Correctional Institution.

Jude has been incarcerated since summer 2005 when he was arrested for assaulting his mother. He was on probation at the time for an earlier conviction. Jude, 28, pleaded guilty to battery. His lawyer said he is expected to be released by spring.

Eight former and current officers have been charged in federal court in connection with the beating Oct. 24, 2004, outside an off-duty police party in Bay View. Jude was accused of stealing a police badge. No badge was ever found and Jude was not charged.

In April, a Milwaukee jury acquitted three officers in the case and failed reach a verdict on a single count against one of them.

A rally is planned at 5:30 p.m. today to mark the anniversary of the beating at the Milwaukee City Hall rotunda.

According to a claim of injury, Jude's attorneys estimate damages for Jude and his wife at $30 million. Jude declined to talk about the amount. He said he continues to suffer physical and mental problems from the beating.

"I understand about the taxpayers. I respect the taxpayers ... But the city of Milwaukee, (Mayor) Tom Barrett, he's responsible. It's his city. I lost a lot. I've got doctor bills myself. My dignity. I got tortured in so many ways. "I am not the same Frank Jude Jr. Whatever they took from me I want back."

The latest disgrace from Milwaukee.

This story made 48 hours and a couple other national news programs when it happened a couple years back. The storyline was poor black man was beat up by a group of Milwaukee police officers for crashing their party, who said he stole a badge.

Egged on by a local media that has only played the anti-cop angle, he now intends to sue -- from prison! This is a guy who has a history of drug dealing, wife beating, and ultimately landed in jail this time for beating his mother. Did I mention his vocation as a male stripper before the incident?

And all it will take, according to his lawyers, is $30 million to get the good old Frank back.

I dont doubt that he had his a$$ kicked by the police. What is terrible about it is this:

I understand about the taxpayers. I respect the taxpayers ... But the city of Milwaukee, (Mayor) Tom Barrett, he's responsible.

That is a lot of money out of my pocket, not that this city isnt broke enough.

This story appears on the front page of today's Milwaukee Journal right alongside the headline "MPS gets a tax suprise."

Poor MPS (Milwaukee Public Schools), what's the suprise? Well, they plan to double the projected tax levy increase from +3.5% to +7.7%. Gotta love it how the paper paints this as the school system getting bad news.... nevermind the taxpayers who foot the bill for a failing school system.

He said he continues to suffer physical and mental problems from the beating.

Not sure about physical (except for "getting physical") but for certain he had mental problems BEFORE the beating.

"I am not the same Frank Jude Jr. Whatever they took from me I want back."

The ability and inclination to beat women?

What, you figure that the $30M, in the absence of what you "lost", will at least allow you to hire professionals to do the beatings for you, while you watch? Hope your lawyers tick you off, and become your next victims.
