Tonight's History Channel two-hour documentary on the photo and Iwo Jima generally, as well as the aftermath, was excellent. Narrated by Gene Hackman. More shows about Iwo on right now and in the next hour on History Channel, but I'm going to watch the replay of FNC's/Oliver North's "War Stories" coming up in 30 minutes or so. Fascinating, amazing stuff.

Yes it was, but the documentary contains a "wannabee." One of the sailors who claims he was there, explains that the landing craft were mounted with machine guns to be used in case the troops "hesitated" leaving the boats when they hit the beach. Not true.

He also claims he helped load bodies in body bags onto the landing craft to return them to the ships. He said the boats were so full of bodies he had to jump on them to keep them from rolling off the boat into the ocean. Not true. The dead were buried on Iwo Jima.
