Santorum -- nemesis of left -- in trouble
San francisco Chronicle ^ | 10/22/6 | Marc Sandalow

There is probably no one the left would rather see defeated this November than Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum.

The two-term Republican is a reliable ally of President Bush on matters from Iraq to confirming judges. He is a religious conservative who has spoken out against abortions, gay unions and contraception. He is a liaison to the business community and a consistent vote against environmental regulation. He is No. 3 in the GOP's Senate hierarchy.

By most measures, he is the most vulnerable incumbent in the Senate.

With just more than two weeks remaining before election day, Democrat Bob Casey Jr. leads Santorum in surveys by anywhere from 5 to 13 percentage points. Democrats regard Santorum's seat as the surest bet of the six GOP seats they need to win a Senate majority. And there are signs that Republicans are pulling back resources in an acknowledgement that there are other battles they are more likely to win.

The travails of a brash 48-year-old conservative who has talked about someday running for president draw unrestrained delight from liberals around the country, who hold the same contempt for Santorum that many conservatives hold for Massachusetts Sen. Edward Kennedy or California Sen. Barbara Boxer.

"No one is further to the right in the Senate than Rick Santorum,'' said Ralph Neas, president of the liberal advocacy group People for the American Way. "If he had his way, the constitutional clock would be turned back about seven decades.''

"Gays would be thrilled and overjoyed'' at a Santorum loss,

I can't wait till the morning of November 8th, when you and CG wake up to your worst nightmare, a re-elected Rick Santorum.

"If you think Santorum's a RINO then you're also smoking crack."

If you put down the GOP talking points and the koolaid and examined his record, perhaps you'd see that he isn't very conservative at all.

He loves big government. He supports forced redistribution of wealth. He supports increased funding to the UN. Even if you like some of the things that he wants to do, they aren't conservative in their implimentation as they expand the size and scope of government.

Instead of name calling, look at the legislation that he supports. Don't rely on lobbying groups who measure how well he does in voting their agenda an about 20 votes a year.

Look at what he proposes and pushed that isn't recorded and isn't rated by the various groups.

Learn how to think for yourself and quit being a lap dog for a party that doesn't give a damn about your values except to open your wallet up and to get your vote.

Forget about Toomey and look at his actual votes.

Toomey is a politician who wants to get Party support the next time he runs.

You are too easily taken in by the political theater that these guys are masters of.

Hey, is it NOT reasonable to expect the Spector voters to return in kind and reelect Santorum?

Uh you are the one in the coma with your irrational almost democrat moonbat hatred of a good conservative senator, Rick Santorum.

I sent my $ to Santorum after reading this thread. The arguments by the "principled conservatives" here are irrelevant, their votes are completely trivial. What matters is funding enough ads and vote drives to offset the Philly fraud and Soros money.

Don't start that crap with me. I've already addressed her points all I care to on another thread. It's really of no consequence to me whether either one of you vote for Santorum or whether you aid Casey the piano-playing chicken to a Senatorial seat.

Call me when the Constitution Party in PA actually gets off its butt and does something worth getting behind. As it is, they can't even field a candidate who can properly proofread his website.

I honestly feel sorry for you if you are as miserable a person in real life as you come off on line. But I do thank you for attending the Johnstown rally, and for standing up for Second Amendment rights. At least you put your money where your mouth is.

Of course it's reasonable and I bet many if not most will vote for Santorum. The problem is much more on the right where some are saying "No way will I vote for Santorum since he didn't campaign for Tomey" which would have been an unprecedented move for a junior senator of the same party to undermine his senior senator like that. Some also point to whatever spending Santorum has voted for to claim he's some sort of closet liberal despite his 90% ratings on his voting record from every conservative watchdog group out there. Santorum is easily the most conservative Senator but still some of these boobs amongst us want to sit on their hands and not vote for him.

Well, stew in your own juices then.

The choice is between him and Casey, and if you think conservatives should stay home in a snit because Santorum isn't conservative enough, then you obviously got issues.

He loves big government. He supports forced redistribution of wealth. He supports increased funding to the UN.

Name me one Republican besides Paul that advocates getting the US out of the UN. You're not going to get the US out of the UN overnight. Here's a hint, work within the party instead of bitching about not getting your 100%.

Learn how to think for yourself and quit being a lap dog for a party that doesn't give a damn about your values except to open your wallet up and to get your vote.

Dude, I don't smooch the RNC's butt at every turn. I do know this - when there's a solid conservative Republican in the race against a lefty, the obvious, no-brainer choice is to go with the solid conservative.

However, he was the eloquent spokesman of the ban on partial birth abortion and cornered the despicable Barbara Boxer ("you're not born until you going home in the cab"), Russell Feingold, Frank Lausenberg (and the misspelling is deliberate) et al, and proved that they are monsters.

Do you have proof of that claim? No, you don't.

Conservative Goddess, October 15, 2006 - "Yes, I advocated voting for Joe Hoeffel in the general election so that a real, honest to goodness, PRO-LIFE SENATOR by the name of John Kyl, would then chair the Judiciary Committee."

If Toomey can forgive Santorum, then surely conservative voters in PA can too.

Looks like they didn't. Shucks.
