OXFORD, Miss.-A University of Mississippi police officer was killed early Saturday morning while conducting a traffic stop near the university campus.
Officer Robert Langley, 30, had stopped a vehicle for speeding when the driver suddenly pulled away, dragging him approximately 200 yards. Langley suffered severe head injuries and was taken by helicopter to the Medical Center in Memphis where he was pronounced dead.
Within 30 minutes of the incident, Oxford Police detained 20-year-old Daniel Cummings, a second-year UM student from Germantown, Tenn. Cummings has been charged with capital murder of police officer and is being held in the Lafayette County Detention Center.
A four-year veteran of the University Police Department, Langley had returned in April from serving with the National Guard in Afghanistan. He is survived by his wife Lisa, two sons and two stepdaughters.
"There are no words to describe the heartache we feel. This is a tragedy for so many people in so many ways, and our hearts are grieving for Officer Langley's family," said Chancellor Robert Khayat. "He served his country when it needed him and, like police officers everywhere, he was dedicated to making our communities safe. This is a tragic event for us all."
The incident is the first death in the line of duty for a University of Mississippi police officer, said UPD Chief Jeffrey VanSlyke.
"We are a small department and something like this hits everyone very hard," said VanSlyke. "Every law enforcement officer knows the potential danger every time they go to work. Robert Langley was a devoted father, a respected police officer. He was our brother."
Any excuse you may give barring that the boy suffered an epileptic seizure is pathetic.
That is exactly the question I was asking. He is the man in Oxford that can get you out of a pinch.
btw, ever heard of Dave Herban who got busted back in '82?
Obviously you didn't read my post correctly. I have stated from the beginning that I do not defend him. I have never implied that it was "just" a mistake.... What is making things worse are the people that are concentrating on things that have nothing to do with the matter... Where he is from, etc. has nothing to do with it and your hateful comments are useless. Obviously there is absolutely NOTHING that can be done to rectify the situation.. But as Christians we can pray for the entire Langley Family and Cummings Family instead of sitting around feeling hatred. PS - "Tragedy: an event resulting in great loss and misfortune" Was this not a great loss by all that knew Langley? Yes, it was.
How many times must I repeat that I have not ONCE implied in any shape, form, fashion that I have excused or justified his actions? I have not read any confirmed evidence that he was under sort of influence, so I do not know if it is true... If he was, then he was responsible for doing those things and THUS STILL RESPONSIBLE for taking an innocent life. I respect and support the police department, I am not sure how you twisted around what I said to think that I don't... They spend their lives trying to keep our towns, cities, country safe and I am greatly appreciate that those chose to spend their lives that way
MISTAKE: an error in action, calculation, opinion, or judgment caused by poor reasoning, carelessness, insufficient knowledge, etc.
I make mistakes every day. People don't usually die as a result. Your friend broke the law and when he was caught, he deliberately put the officer's life in danger with horrible consequences. "Mistake" just doesn't seem strong enough of a term to describe what this guy did.
And my comments are not hateful. I suspect that they don't sit well with you because you are sympathetic to your friend. Get used to the criticism. He's got a long road ahead of him if he doesn't get lucky with a deal.
This is ridiculous... Give me a better word for mistake and I will use it for goodness sake. I still wasn't justifying his actions.. I am just saying obviously it wasn't in his intention to kill him... Intention to kill or not, it was still wrong. Criticize the facts about what happened... I just want people to stop making all these assumptions about what they think they know about a person based on one circumstance (as terrible as it may be). And, I have not called him my friend once if you haven't noticed. I haven't been friends with him since I was about 5 and we went to the same high school but didn't know each other.
Mine too.
And as Robert's cousin, I speak for the whole family, we do appreciate your prayers and thoughts. Keep his wife and children in your prayers, I know they need it the most.
No that is not obvious. Did his gas pedal stick ? Did he forget to let go of the officer? This punk deserves what he gets.
Knowing him and his family it is obvious to me that he would never INTENTIONALLY do that. I am no longer up for discussion on this website because everyone on here is a complete disappointment. My prayers are with Langley up in heaven and all of the people here that love him.
And please don't think that I don't know what you are thinking right now. I had a friend in high school that seemed like a really nice guy to everyone. One day, he decided to shoot (kill) his stepfather in the back and strangle his little sister (6-7yrs) with a dog leash. Obviously, he was nice to some people but he was scum. You'll get over the shock eventually and see what I mean.
Since you know the killer so well, please pass on a collective SCREW YOU from the rest of us.

I was all irritated because my parking lot was closed now I feel really bad because they are having visitation there today.
I didnt hear anything about alcohol, someone mentioned speed.
WHy don't you read everything I've written before you make comments like that. I don't know him well at all... If you had done your research before making that statement you would have known that
Got a couple more, it's a n00b-a-palooza!
