Early in the year, we became the first newspaper in the state to endorse the candidacy of Katherine Harris for the United States Senate. We were one of the few newspapers in the state to do so. The press, with few exceptions, does not like Katherine Harris, and campaign problems that would earn no more than a few lines in any other race become front page headlines in hers.
The problems and yes, errors, in her campaign, have overshadowed what she offers to the voters of Florida.
Like many Polk Countians, we have known her since childhood, and have watched with pride as she worked her way up the political system. That is a perspective that few others have.
She chose to begin her campaign with a stop in Bartow, and her father, from whom we suspect she inherited her drive and tenacity, said at that campaign kick-off that her political career has been marked by integrity . . . honesty . . . hard work.
Indeed it has been.
For her part, Katherine Harris said the campaign is not about making promises, it's about keeping promises.
Beyond such popular campaign themes as meeting the needs of senior citizens, promoting national security, and fighting oil drilling off Florida's Gulf Coast, she said:
We want to preserve this piece of paradise for future generations. That's the kind of vision we would like to see Florida politicians at every level of government embrace.
We respect Katherine Harris for her integrity, her leadership, her political courage, and her tireless dedication to public service.
Ours is a voice in the editorial wilderness; we raise it in support of Katherine Harris for the United States Senate.

Although the "Polls" show her down this means little, here in Florida...
where's that picture of her on the horse....very attractive
I saw her on H&C the other night. She was friendly and articulate, even when hammered by the idiot Colmes she kept her sense of humor and lady-like Southern-style charm. If I lived in Florida, I would not hesitate to vote for her.
How refreshing. Honestly, the only person who I am proud to vote for this election is Katherine Harris. The rest I have to hold my nose, but I will vote a straight Republican ballot.
I see a tv cameraman and Uncle Sam in the background. Who is that dignified gentleman in the foreground?
Roger that.
We had a great day campaigning for her this afternoon. Lots of folks stopped by the booth at the flea market to pick up yard signs, bumper stickers, and to share their support for Harris.
Bless you!!!
Bless you, too, NN!!
Putnam and HARRIS BTTT!
Thank you. By the way, I love your tag line. LOL! Have truer words ever been written? I don't think so.
That's great news. Thank you for all your hard work.
It's a shame, but I really think it's come to that --- I view the democrats as anti-American.
I do too.
I doubt we're alone.
I truly hope and pray Katherine Harris wins.
She certainly can!!!
Isn't it upsetting that the GOP gave her almost no support. This gal is doing it on her own, and I admire her spunk and determination. My prayers will be answered when she wins. :O)
I am sickened by that. I cut my donation to the RNC dramatically. Better to give to individual candidates. I so want your prayers to be answered. It's possible!
