As a graduate student focusing on WWII, I can say I've never heard that either.
That part of the movie doesn't pass the smell test.

No, it's utterly silly. And I wrote about this in "Patriot's History of the United States." Remember the main effort (despite the horrid casualties on Iwo and Okinawa) was in Europe, which got 80% of the war materiel . . . AFTER the a-bomb skimmed off what it needed.
