You write:

"...ensure each other's right to make patient care decisions for their partner, and other similar factors..."

Would that not be provided for via instruments such as a health care proxy, living-will, etc?

To say the latter is to abolish marriage as we know it, and I can't see that the equal protection principle requires this.

As long as the State subsudizes marriage, I think it does.

Furthermore, if McCain becomes the "annointed" Republican candidate, I wouldn't count on a competitive primary.

There's going to be plenty of folks who will believe that a McCain that supports gay marriage (or something like gay marriage) is still better than a Democrat. That's bound to be an issue as well.

Some can be; others (e.g. sharing in insurance, bringing wrongful death actions, sharing a tenancy in the entirety, etc.) cannot.

Precisely. We can't let our disagreement with McCain cloud our judgment. This is not fatal to his presidential ambitions. After all, George H.W. Bush and Bob Dole were hardly conservative Republicans, and yet they got the nominations.

McCain is providing cover for his gang of seven from the rabid gay activists that have been threatening to out a couple of them. McCain can't afford to lose any of his supporters to the Democrat smear campaign against Republicans.

Wills, Power of attorney, etc. can be used to address the legal issues of single-sex partnerships. Having 2-3% of the population redefining words at will leads us quickly in to Humpty-Dumpty land:

Humpty Dumpty: When I use a word, it means just what I choose it to mean - neither more nor less.
Alice: The question is, whether you can make words mean so many different things.
Humpty Dumpty: The question is: which is to be master - that's all.

However, if you're cool with new definitions, then you will also like the idea of "gay triangles" -- they're exactly like regular triangles except they have four sides

The long held desire of the left is to totally destroy the institution of marriage. Homosexual marriage does very little for the homosexuals except to allow them the thought that their sins are somehow condoned by the state; however, it severely diminishes the value of marriage to the rest of us. The left hopes that if society gets to the point where marriage means nothing, then it will simply disappear.

yea, somebody needs to ask his butt buddy, Lindsey, if he agrees with McCain. Lets get his opinion of this out in the open for South Carolinians to see.

Really? This is carrying radical individualism awfully far. Following this line of thinking, there would be no more tax exemptions for non-profits, religious or otherwise. Everyone, regardless of income, would pay the same taxes -- to make high income individuals pay more subsidizes the poor at the expense of the rich.

The federal system would have to be dismantled in favor of direct democracy.

There could not be a separate system of courts for juveniles either -- isn't this age discrimination? And aren't school taxes a subsidy of the young at the expense of older property owners. It's discriminatory!

That's just for starters.

I'm no fan of John McCain by any means, however, to be fair and balanced . . . .

McCain does clarify his position on gay marriage @ 1:00 into this MSNBC video (after the :15 sec. advertisement).

I can include or exclude just about anyone from my will (granted some states have restrictions on excluding a spouse), I can give a power of attorney to anyone I want and I can name whomever I want as a beneficiary on an insurance policy. None of these issues have ANYTHING to do with marriage.

Homosexuals who live together can arrange their affairs legally so that they can acquire all the perceived benefits that they believe married couples have.

There is no logical reason allowing state "marriage" for this abomination. Angry, petulant, politically motivated demands by any self identified "minority" cannot or should not be accommodated by a civilized society. What's next? Interspecies marriage?

Gay marriage should be only between a man and a woman.

Marriage is all about children and encouragine the unite which is the core of society.

EVERYTHING the homosexual are demanding can be had with a simple form. cohabitation agreements are at office depot for $24.95. Healthcare surrogates and living will forms are available for FREE.

Homosexuality is ONLY about sex. NOTHING ELSE.

We do not provide financial benefits for a sex fetish. By you logic the person who has sex with dogs should be able to deduct the dog expenses as a spouse.

Sorry but society rewards the institutution not the indivisual. Homosexuals seek financial reward because they like to play with the sex organs of members of the same sex. Homosexuality contributions NOTHING to society and thus society is under no obligation to reward homsoexual conduct. In fact society has an obligation to discourage behavior which does not benefit society.

Homosexuals are free to pop all the orgasms the like in the privacy of their bed room, once they leave that bedroom they are no longer private.
