Do you think that maybe he did the right thing for his party? You may not have liked it, but I believe most think that it was the right thing to do at that time.

Newt was about to be booted from his Speaker job because the Republicans lost five House seats in the 1998 elections when he had predicted a 30-seat gain. He had barely survived a coup attempt a year earlier, and his hubris combined with his shaky ethics made him a great target for the Democrats. If he was really interested in the good of his party, he would have declined to run for re-election rather than quit immediately after the election.
