I suspect that it's a bit of white propoganda. It's smart enough to not be so heavy handed as the libs normally are. Give your side a few shots to make your shots against the other side, your main objective, look credible.
It's not uncommon to give up outdated classified information to make a double agent look good. Similar ploy here is my opinion.
