Sen. Dianne Feinstein plans to take on global warming, gangs and cancer if she's re-elected to a third full term by California voters next month.
The 73-year-old Democratic lawmaker listed her top issues while campaigning in Sacramento on Tuesday, picking up her first formal endorsement from law enforcement groups.
"I really want to make every day of the next six years count," she said. "We can't stop global warming, but what we can do is slow it."
Feinstein, who enjoys a 2-to-1 lead in most polls over Republican challenger Dick Mountjoy, said she wants to introduce legislation that imposes tougher penalties against gang members and provide more witness protection funding.
During a wide-ranging interview with The Bee's editorial board, the senator criticized the Bush administration's handling of the war in Iraq, calling Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld "arrogant" and "stubborn." She urged Californians to support a pair of bonds -- Proposition 1E for flood protection and Proposition 84 for water projects -- on the November ballot, while pledging to do her part to channel more federal flood protection dollars to California.
She said it's possible for Democrats to pick up enough seats in the upcoming midterm election to capture a majority of the Senate.
Feinstein predicted that Democratic candidates will win in Rhode Island, Pennsylvania, Montana and Virginia.
And she's hoping for Democratic triumphs in Tennessee, Missouri and Ohio.
Should Democrats do well, Feinstein said she hopes for a more cooperative atmosphere in Congress.
"I would hope we extend a hand across the aisle," she said.

It ain't gonna happen in Pennsylvania - Santorum is even with Casey and has the momentum...
Where did you see that?
Republicans are pro gang and pro cancer so she probably has a winning platform.
I was wondering where in the US Constitution the federal government was given the authority to wage war on the climate, but I think I found it in Article F, Section U, Subsection C, Paragraph K, sentences Y, O, and U.
Apparently islamonazis, nuclear proliferation to unstable psychotic regimes like NKorea and Iran, and national security matters don't matter to this head-in-the-sand senator from La La Land!
Yeah, that too.
"Global warming, gangs and cancer."
None of which are the responsibility of the Federal Government.
On the plus side, the Sac bee actually printed Dick Mountjoy the Republican candidate name - most ink I have seen all year.
Now just wait a minute !! - don't you understand that global warming is part of national security, Iraq , Iran, and NK.
If our military wasn't using up so many resources in Iraq and securing us at home, we could reduce global temperatures by at least 0.000007
(do I need a /sarc tag here ?)
What has she done along these lines in past years? One thing is for sure, she will continue to thwart all attempts to imprison military combatants and continue to support those opposed to the Iraq war/WOT and do nothing to close our borders.
Article F, Section U, Subsection C, Paragraph K, sentences Y, O, and U.
Now that's funny....LOL!!!
Let's see...we have NK testing nukes...Iran threatening us, trying to get nukes...Iraq desperately trying to get something positive going...al-queda and all other radical Islamist groups wanting to inihilate Israel and the USA...
BUT.....the three top priorities of one of the senior DEM Senators is
Global warming
gangs
Cancer....
Oh, yeah....the DEMS really DO want to make changes, don't they??
LOLOLOLOL>..........
ROFLMAO!!
When they say "Law Enforcement Groups" what they SHOULD say is "Public Employee Unions" to be more accurate.
DiFi = another example of why we need term limits.
All she's interested in is gun control and impeachment.
OR a Republican Party in California that actually promotes and supports their candidates.
Dick Mountjoy has been treated like a red headed stepchild for his whole campaign.
