May I refer you to a short column written by Peter Hitchens who has an admiration of Moscow and is also a balanced critical voice. It's called the new Russian menace but it's not as critical as it sounds!!

Certainly it's awful. I just started thinking contract killing is in the past in our country? but it is not! And it's widely discussing. But where's relation with Putin policy. it's no so evidently as exposed in western media? And let split bankers murders and journalist. Bankers murders it's always for money. The only in case of Politkovsakya it's politically motivated murder.Russian natives for the most dislike her. For her lopsided interpretation of the Chechen war. She wrote a lot of federal forces crimes, nothing about rebels. And 'SOMEONE' it's not a government, In US SOMEONE wants ... and so what. it's not serious. We seek for better future not for 'glory days'. And think it's our privilege to determine it.
P.S I've never voted for Putin, I don't like communist! I've always voted for democratic parties in the past. But now democrats has lost any support for their economic policy in 90's

Anna Politkovskaya was mainly a critic of the Chechen war. The Chechen War is Russias front in their war against Islamic extremist. Anna was much like our main stream media in the US where the media is always attacking the president.
If this was Putin's doing or someone under Putin that did these attacks against the Journalists then it is obvious he will not except anyone questioning his actions.
In other words if Putin wins this fight against the journalists you will not get any information from anyplace other then Putins approved message. At that point you have absolutely no security. We at Freerepublic worry about your security.
If this is a psychotic murderer that has a twisted way to help Putin. Then you dont have much to worry about. One man will not win, and I hope your police get the guy soon.
We dont like what our Main Stream Media says against our president and the war, but we have to live with it because the alternative (government controlled information) is much worse.

So what do you think of him? How closely do you think Putin listens to him and follows the Eurasian geopilitical strategy?
Because from where I sit, it looks a lot like Putin is following his ideas.

Read
this.
The Moscow's prosecutor's office claims that was a gay affair.
I'd like to translate this for other FReepers, but short of time.

I wish you well.
However, Putin's path to energy security has put him into bed with some very unsavory characters. The appearance from this side of the globe is that Putin will buy, sell, and make deals with the lowest of the low of humanity on this globe. Not exactly the kind of foundation designed for future prosperity.

Putin's path to energy security has put him into bed with some very unsavory characters. Russia exports mainly oil and gas, also metals and some arms.
That's sad ( for a Russian) but true. We have a big job to do to change it and we want to - there's big enough population and mineral exports don't provide good jobs for all of them.
So Russia now has common interests with those exporting the same, probably excluding arms.

"Putin's path to energy security has put him into bed with some very unsavory characters..." I hope Putin isn't close, long term friends with the Saudi crime family.
