My son just called from North Shore of Oahu and told us he felt the quake at 7:07 AM there. It registered 4.6 and the epicenter was on the Big Island, close to Hilo.

Magnitude 6.3 Earthquake Strikes Hawaii

(AP) HONOLULU An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.3 struck Hawaii early Sunday morning, waking up residents and knocking out power.

The U.S. Geological Survey also reported several aftershocks, including one measuring a magnitude of 5.8. No damage reports were immediately available.

The quake occurred at 7:07 a.m. local time, 10 miles north-northwest of Kailua Kona, a town on the west coast of the Big Island, said Don Blakeman, a geophysicist at the National Earthquake Information Center, part of the U.S. Geological Survey.

Blakeman said researchers were still trying to ascertain how many aftershocks struck and how large.

Blakeman said there was no risk of a Pacific-wide tsunami, but a possibility of significant wave activity in Hawaii.

The quake occurred about 155 miles to the southeast of Honolulu, the state capital, in Oahu.

We are in Puna...close to the Volcano.

Felt a sustained shaking but no TV's breaking or anything.

Apparently Kona (on the other side of the island) got it worse.

We felt one aftershock. I had been thinking a couple of days ago that we were in for a quake because we haven't had one for awhile. Usually we get a bit of a shake every month or so. Perhaps the pressure has been building up; thus the larger quake this morning.

Hope that's the end.

WE had a 6.5 here on the central coast of CA in 2003....we know how the folks in the 50th state feel right now..nerves on edge...

Lesson learned here for all of us...prepare emergency kits for your homes and one for the cars..you never know when something will hit like this..We took a course a year ago and it was enlightening. There was so much one doesn't think about until it is too late...The Red Cross has tips for this too.

I just remembered that The Ironman is in Kona next Saturday.

I guess it probably won't be affected unless there are aftershocks.
