FOX hasn't reported 6.9 for a long time. They're saying 6.3

I just remembered that The Ironman is in Kona next Saturday.

I guess it probably won't be affected unless there are aftershocks.

Back in the day, motor oil came in cans, and one had a separate spout that punched through the top of the can. When inverted over the filler pile the oil would glug out of the can, and the bottom would pop in and out as the oil flowed out and the air burped in to replace it.

That is sorta like what I think happens in the center of a plate that is being squeezed, the center can pop up and down a bit with the changing forces (Atlantic sea-floor spread vs mountain building for example).

But as your tagline says...

Brother and wife have no power in upcounty Maui. Ate breakfast using camp stove. Nephew living on 17th floor in condo in Honolulu was evacuated. He said that it was quite an experience quite a bit of swaying.

I don't want to imagine that. At the time I lived just east of Riverside and felt that one pretty good. I'm sure if it was an 8.5, my house would have been badly damaged.

No, it was an early report. Once the USGS got more information and reported an 6.5 and now a 6.3, FOX changed to that figure.

Can earthquake activity trigger volcanic activity?

Yes - and the reverse is true as well; volcanic activity can also trigger earthquakes. An earthquake can open up a new vent for a volcano, or cause a faster/slower eruption. However, a volcano can cause a quake due to pressure or collapse of a volcanic chamber, too. Both are related events in that area, I'd imagine... but whether the quake came first or the volcano did in this case has yet to be determined. :)

I was over in Kauai about 3.5 weeks ago. The first Costco is about to open over there in Lihue, and people are pretty excited. Gas was still $3.45 a gallon over there, but Costco should bring that down about 30 cents.

We knew you were going to say that.

He is good. He has a very calming tone. They just reported that there is significant structural damage at a hospital in Kona and they are currently evacuating patients. Also, he just mentioned that it was a 6.5

Honolulu airport closed - live feed says that it's not due to damage per se, but it's because the bathrooms are currently not working due to lack of power.

Reports of injuries coming in now from Maui, including one nurse at the hospital (supposedly multiple lacerations).

I should know better than to not read through the thread before posting. Ours may have been a 6.8 in '94, revised from 6.9.

I lived in Santa Monica, south of Pico, near the beach. North of Pico had worse structural damage, but we definitely felt the whole thing. Los Angeles native here. That one was the worst.

I didn't read ahead on the thread. 6.3 or 6.5 is more like it.
