I lied.
That line reminds me of Earl Long, brother of Huey Long, both governors of Louisiana.
An aide comes in to Earls office and tells him that there is an irate supporter who gave a lot of money in Earl's election campaign for the promise of a position on the levee board. He demands to see the governor elect, who has just appointed someone else to the position.
Earl Long tells the aide to just go out there and tell him the truth.
"I lied."
