A spokesman for the Popular Resistance Committees in Gaza, Abu Mujahed, warned Israel on Thursday evening against any broad-scale operations in the area, Israel Radio reported.
In Abu Mujahed's words, such an operation would not secure the release of kidnapped IDF soldier Cpl. Gilad Shalit even if the IDF wiped out everyone living in the Gaza Strip.
He added that Shalit could only be freed through negotiations with a third-party mediator, but not by force. He emphasized that they were fully equipped to hold Shalit captive for years, and Israel wouldn't find him.
Earlier, Abu Ubaida, spokesman for Hamas's armed wing, Izzadin al-Kassam, declared that Hamas would avenge the deaths of the six Palestinians who were killed in clashes with IDF troops near Khan Yunis overnight Wednesday.
Ubaida said that "in light of the atrocious crimes in Khan Yunis and in the northern Gaza Strip, we will shell and strike everywhere, north and south. Our reaction will be so powerful, it will shake the earth. The enemy can wait patiently for our actions."
Well, it is worth a try...
I don't know, but I will give you odds that it would free him.
I would make them pay a price that will be talked about for years.
The Israelis, in my opinion, are being far too tolerant. Palestinians kidnapped a soldier and want to exchange him for convicted criminals that are in prison. Israel should kidnap some innocent Palestinians and offer them in trade. Turnabout is fair play.
They could put GPS guidance chips under their skin. They'll know where every soldier is. Not that I favor such an idea in general (don't get me wrong on this), but in this case as a temporary measure to stop future kidnappers from getting away with it. For each soldier, put the chip in a different place. Kidnappers will always be found and brought to justice. Once the soldiers become civilians, remove the chip.
It will force kidnappers to either stop kidnapping, or to kill the soldiers. I don't want them to kill soldiers, but if they did then these cases would end much more quickly, they could not blackmail the government, and the army/police won't have to tip-toe around to bring the criminals to justice.
