I think the controversy iarises from one group of offensive clothing being banned while clothing with a symbol offensive to another group is allowed.

The article goes on to state that Malcolm X clothing is allowed at the school.

Anybody who follows these threads knows I am no fan of the Confederacy. And the Confederate flag is a very poor symbol of Southern heritage. The Confedracy was a movement of a relatively small group of politicians and not a true popular revolution. A large number of Southerners only showed lukewarm support for the CSA or were outright Unionists.

But this typical double standard in the schools today is terribly wrong. If the Confederate X is banned for offensivness, why isn't the Malcolm X? This is the failure of PC, it's not mutual respect and civility, but rather it's "I can hit you, but don't hit back". This does nothing to further goodwill.

I say ban both Xs. Better yet, make them all wear unifroms.

Banning clothing of one type, while allowing stuff that others might find offensive (just because it belongs to a minority), or allowing some dumb-ass to run around with a Che Guevara T-shirt, or a Red Star of Communism on their clothes is outright hypocritical. But then hypocrasy seems to be the order of the day anymore. Ban anything with any emblem remotely relating to the Confederacy, but allow the Red Star to be worn (an emblem of a government who enslaved millions and killed millions more). I think the Founders would be spinning in their graves over this one. It smacks of PC and government sponsored speech and thought. Kinda like Communism doncha think?!

Gosh, I hope I'm not going to be banned, too.

Actually, school uniforms are the best answer to this question. Schools can ban clothing if it's "disruptive." That's not precise enough. It leaves too much discretion to school administrators. They'll act as they please, and there will be protests from those who disagree. Better to have uniforms.

The principal at a Fayette County middle school has banned all clothing with the confederate flag emblem...

Wonder how the story would be received if it read The principal at a Fayette County middle school has banned all clothing with the Jewish Star of David emblem...

Good article by Walter Williams on why the Civil War was not about slavery, but rather more about trade, tariffs, and states' rights. The abolition of slavery just happened to be a fortunate outcome of the war.

At one point, there was a t-shirt with a pic of Malcolm X and the words "It's a black thing, you wouldn't understand"

Somebody put together a t-shirt with Albert Einstein with the words "It's a white thing, you wouldn't understand"

I'm thinking a kid wearing the latter would be expelled

I could take you more seriously if you actually knew what you were talking about. The flag in question is not the Confederate States of America Flag - it is the Confederate Battle Flag. I for one will always hold it in high regard out of respect for the brave men who fought under it for what they believed in. I also hold the flags of many other military groups in high regard for the same reason. For example the Flag of the French Foreign Legion - most of those men fought for their brothers - not for France which is ok with me. There is nothing more honorable than fighting for your brothers in arms. It is what holds the US Marine Corps together, for one.
