could= could NOT!

note to self: type slower than this & make less mistakes.

AIs seldom could afford to buy the "basic necessities" of life. buying slaves was out of the question.

I say ban both Xs. Better yet, make them all wear uniforms.

Gosh, I hope I'm not going to be banned, too.

Actually, school uniforms are the best answer to this question. Schools can ban clothing if it's "disruptive." That's not precise enough. It leaves too much discretion to school administrators. They'll act as they please, and there will be protests from those who disagree. Better to have uniforms.

well for ONCE i AGREE with you.

when i was in school (4 decades ago), males were expected to wear NAVY colored slacks with a button-front dress shirt with collar AND the young LADIES were required to wear a skirt (or slacks on cold days), which was at least knee-length, with a similar blouse to the male's dress shirt.

i can't remember that ANYBODY complained!

This may be getting more off-topic, but highly interesting that members of the Cherokee Nation (REAL Indians, not fake 1/16th-Indian white guys) come to the Pt. Lookout POW memorial services to lay wreaths at the memorial to rebel POWs. I've seen it myself. The people were real, too, not just fakirs like the casino people up in Connecticut.

Perhaps they were descendants of the following prisoners. [Source: February 27, 1864, Daily Picayune of New Orleans, reporting on a letter from a federal in Knoxville published in the Chicago Tribune of February 18]

Among our prisoners are about 100 copperfaced, bareheaded and barefooted Indians from the smoky mountains of North Carolina. Such savage wretches should never be taken prisoner. They will be sent North with the rebel deserters.

So they formed their own standing army, and attacked the United States first.

I heard that the firing on Fort Sumter was done by an irate citizen who had his own cannon.

When I read about claims of Indians owning other Indians, I about fell off my chair. It was like, "Oh really. And in what country would this be happening?"

BTW, have the leaves changed colors and fallen off the trees yet? A colorful sight to behold...

By 1860, the Cherokees had 4,600 slaves; the Choctaws, 2,344; the Creeks, 1,532; the Chickasaws, 975; and the Seminoles, 500. Some Indian slave owners were as harsh and cruel as any white slave master. Indians were often hired to catch runaway slaves; in fact, slave-catching was a lucrative way of life for some Indians, especially the Chickasaws.

Hers what Mr. google got me. Right on top too. Sounds like a lot of Indians owning slaves to me.

lincoln & his coven of creeps would have done ANYTHING to get more POWER & $$$$$$. ANYTHING

The one thing that Lincoln would not do is enslave people, like Jeff Davis did, issuing an order, after the Emancipation Proclamation, that any black man, even if a freed one, found in the Confederacy, was to be put into slavery.

Now, as for the primary cause for Southern secession, here is an author giving the Southern point of view.

After stating the usual defenses, slavery was only one factor, that the South was being abused on tarriff's etc, the South was afraid of not being compensentated for their slaves, he states,

It’s often overlooked that the main dispute over slavery between Northern and Southern leaders involved the extension of slavery into the territories, not the continuation of slavery where it already existed. Most Republicans were not opposed to the continuation of slavery in those states where it was already established. Indeed, as mentioned earlier, the majority of the men in Lincoln’s cabinet had no interest in disturbing slavery where it already existed, and Lincoln himself not only shared this view but supported a proposed constitutional amendment that would have made it permanently impossible for the federal government to abolish slavery in any of the existing slave states. The key dispute was over the extension of slavery into the territories.(emphasis added)

If the Republicans had been willing to compromise to a relatively small degree on the extension of slavery, the Deep South states may very well have rejoined the Union soon after they seceded (in fact, they may not have seceded at all if the Republicans had not insisted on banning slavery in all the territories).

So, Lincoln was not going to violate the Constitution.

The Republican Party had won a fair election based on the platform of limiting the expansion of slavery and was not going to compromise on it.

Thus, the issue of Tarriff's were not important enough to secede over and had there been a concession to the South on slavery expansion, (according to this pro-Southern view author), secession would have not occurred.

"If so, I'm not against that. What I view as unworkable (as evidenced by these continuing controversies about "inappropriate" slogans or images on T-shirts, etc.)is a dress code without uniforms."

Yes, it is a uniform policy and it does help with the 'inappropriate' slogans or any slogans at all including the clothing company emblems (which makes school shopping an adventure..NOT! lol). Even with a uniform policy, the enforcement is arbitrary. The issue has become so out of control that athletic Letter jackets are no longer within uniform policy and otherwise good kids are being suspended for wearing the same thing someone else may never even get called to the Uniform Control Officer for!

There are problems on both sides of the uniform issue. Thankfully we've only got 2 1/2 more years of gubmint school..course that means our baby will be going off to college!

I'm sorry about what happened to your people. But you can't blame that on the bulk of the peaceful Union people of the South no more than I can blame most ordinary rebels for the extortion, murder and false imprionsionments dished out by local confederate thug government.

I'm saddened whenever when some unknowing kid says he/she is wearing the reb flag to honor the heritage of the South. If that's the case, then the heritage of the South is ignorance, thugs running heavy-handed government and abject defeat on the battlefield.

The reb flags belong in cemeteries and memorials to commemorate the honorable soldiers themselves, not as a general endorsement of the rotten cause and regime they so mistakenly served.

Had the CSA won, a true feudal Dark Age would have descended upon the land of freedom for both white and black Americans.

Is that you, Tom Daschle? Fortunately, no one put you in charge of how people can honor their heritage.

Trying out for the New York Times, I see. You've got their style down right, but you've got to work on that spelling.

A thousand pardons. I meant imprisonments, which is what local confederates would do to suspected Unionists often just as an object lesson to make their future extortion of the citizens easier.

Daschle would be at home with the gun-grabbing, big government Democratic Confederate regime.

I guess fans of the Confederacy don't mind oppression of Southerners when it 's other Southerners who are the oppressors.

fwiw, i'm ONE of those AIs,who places wreaths/flowers at the PLPOWC monument.

the large WHITE/RED/BLACK wreath with the 7 white feathers belongs to our band of Tsalagiyi Nvdagi.(white is the color of mourning/death among our people. that's why no bride among our people wears a white dress!)

the RED symbolizes BLOOD of course & the BLACK is for remembrance of those "who have walked on up the trail of stars".

actually about 2500-3000 AIs were "transported to confinement" at PLPOWC. hardly any Indians, Asians,Jews,Latinos or Blacks survived that DAMNyankee hellhole. (it was, to quote a US COL, "less costly to shoot them than to feed the savages".)

4 of my relatives names are on the PLPOWC memorial-all Cherokees from NC. (in our family's case the DYs "batted a thousand"=====> 4 transported = 4 murdered.)

and your PRIMARY source is??? (not secondary, third-hand accounts or common gossip will be accepted.)

be ready to PROVE your source.

not even the book RED OVER BLACK (written by a RADICAL REVIONIST!) says that there were anything like that many slaves held by Indians.

according to the tribal tax records at Tallequah there were exactly 14 slave-owners, who were Indians. FOURTEEN!

WHAT UTTER NONSENSE!

fwiw, what happened to my family was PART of the overall PREMEDITATED DAMNyankee war PLAN of ATROCITIES & CRIMES AGAINST HUMANITY, which was ORDERED by lincoln & his merry band of WAR CRIMINALS, thugs & cheap machine politicians. sherman's comment about "making the South howl" is JUST ONE manifestation of those WAR CRIMES!

SADLY, the "experience" of my family with the DAMNyankee invaders was COMMONPLACE!

to quote Dr Susan Brownmiller: the union army raged through the prostrate southland like a herd of rabid swine, robbing, raping, torturing & killing DEFENSELESS civilians without mercy. the invading union army wrote their names INDELIBLY across the south in BLOOD. (emphasis: MINE)

fwiw, i do NOT blame every northerner for what linoln, the MERCYLESS TYRANT, & his band of WAR CRIMINALS did. otoh, it's really hard for me to be civil to people who:

1. DENY the holocaust committed by the DAMNyankee INVADERS against the "persons other than white" of dixie,

2. TRY to say that "it was just necessary to the overall war effort" and/or

3. SAY things like:

a. "who cares what happened to a bunch of stupid injuns" (as ONE of the FReepers said some months ago) OR

b. "it was a long time ago. why do you care?" (fwiw, the NAZI HOLOCAUST was a LONG TIME AGO TOO & differed from the DY's SLAUGHTER of the INNOCENT only in SIZE. had the "technology" existed, who knows how many "persons other than white" would have survived???)

fwiw, one of the "DAMNYankee coven" said on another thread that it was "TOO BAD that the US army didn't finish the job on your Indians, like President Lincoln wanted"! (NICE GUY don't you think????)
