It's hard to believe this petite, well-mannered Texan - sitting opposite in a Sydney harbourside hotel - caused the kind of stir the music industry has not seen since John Lennon sang about being crucified in 1969.
It's the day before the band's first Australian concert on their Accidents and Accusations world tour.
Maines looks younger than her 31 years.

Aware she may sound "bizarre", the 31-year-old believes the vitriol directed at The Dixie Chicks was part of a right-wing conspiracy.
An organised group known as the Free Republic set out to bring the band down.
The organisation's power, she says, comes through the internet. The site has thousands of subscribers, all of whom were encouraged to destroy the band's music and boycott the radio stations that played it.
"It's scary how much power they do have," she says. "They can take down someone singlehandedly and I don't think Americans are aware of that.
"It's the same group that went after (former US president) Bill Clinton and (gay actress) Ellen DeGeneres."
In the beginning, Maines says, they tried to fight their detractors. Their management tried to alert radio station programmers to what was happening.
"But they weren't open to it and just thought we were grasping at straws to try and salvage something," she says.
"It was just bigger than we could fight and we weren't willing to put ourselves out there to be made to look stupid if people weren't willing to investigate this thing and be open to it."

"For the Free Republic we were a dream come true; they made it their mission to take us down. Apparently we were not supposed to think like this because we play country music."

Perhaps the writer used the word 'petite' to portray Natalie as little David against the Goliath - Free Republic.
Natalie needs to quit whining and get over it. No one wants to listen to her music or her opinions. She singlehandedly ruined her own career.
Our power comes through the internet.
We are legion.
We cannot be stopped.
We never forgive.
We never forget.
Lol. :p
Are you telling me that you don't have your decoder ring? Everyone knows you have to have your ring and the secret handshake to get into a freep
You know I wish we did have the power this nut thinks we have. If only. Actually libs are simply stunned and angry that anyone or any group would have the gall to question what they do. If we've made her life miserable in any small way, then I'm glad.
I stopped buying Springsteen records, too. Saved me about $150 in the past few years.
We be hugh...and the power we have is series.
And mooses can't bite our sisters. All beebers are stuned, as well. We are all powerful.
LOL
More like Natalie should have taken Marketing in college as she failed to understand who her customers were.
Good!
;-)
That's a first step!
Compliments are nice and all, but they destroyed themselves. Their insistance on blaming the messenger is interesting psychologically, but delusional nonetheless.
LOL indeed! She made some bad choices and is becoming quite unhinged as she wreaps what she sows.
And I noticed the portly Maines forgot to mention Dan Rather?
Please, more credit where it is due Ms. Ditzy.
If they'd lose some weight, I might listen to them.
Bwhahahahahahaha
Yea, yea, gnat...we've been looking for a way to get you since you were just a little tike. We always hoped that--some day--you'd eat your foot JUST SO we could, finally, get you!

Hey, chickee...PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY FOR YOUR OWN ACTIONS. Get some!
Geat music and a class act.
Ping!
;-P
As in at least 1/3 body mass?
That's what I say. Who cares what these fat, dumb-ass, socialist, Anti-American, terrorist appeasing bitches have to say about ANYTHING?
