It's ironic that the continental European countries ... are so reluctant to save themselves

I think they are simply hoping that war can somehow be avoided, but I don't believe for a second that once they realize that war is inevitable they will lay down and submit to the barbaric cult of Islam. Don't forget that their long history shows no reluctance to resort to 'ethnic cleansing' when they are pushed too far.
