This is the point that has been missed/ignored by so many as they focus on the nastiness of Foley's behavior. IMs are 2-way chat, not ugly spam, or heavy-breathing on an anonymous phone call. The 'boys' led him on for their amusement or in perverse way to encourage him to write things for which he could be blackmailed later.
No question. . .and one more possibility and as likely or in combination with any the above. . .the 'boy'/boys were in fact gay themselves which I think is surely, 'most likely'. . .
