Very true. Still, I have to point out that the moral of this story is still (and has consistently been) a GOP who just doesn't seem to be able to get its act together and articulate a clear, cogent message.

They were caught utterly flat footed on this - a profound error in judgment and strategy. Just once I'd like to see the 21st Century GOP get ahead of an issue and control the narrative.

Dubya and Congress lost control of the narrative a while ago and seem either uninterested of just unable to regain that control.

I have to agree with you. And it seems that only the Republicans keep getting stung by October surprises every time there is an election.

The Republicans are always playing defense... how about going on offense for once?
