RENO, Nev. (AP) -- The Bush administration will host a conference next week to discuss the recent rash of school violence across the country, the White House said yesterday.
Presidential spokeswoman Dana Perino said the conference will bring together education and law-enforcement officials to talk about the nature of the problem and federal action that can help communities prevent violence and deal with its aftermath.
Three schools have been hit by deadly attacks in the past week, the latest attack coming yesterday in Pennsylvania's Amish country.
"The president is deeply saddened and troubled by the recent school violence and shootings that have taken place in different communities across America," Mrs. Perino said. "It breaks America's collective heart when innocent children who are at school to learn are violently taken hostage and cut down in their own schools."
Mrs. Perino said the conference was still in the planning stages, so a specific date, location and other details were not ready to be announced. It was not clear whether President Bush would attend.
Education Secretary Margaret Spellings, Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales and Bush domestic policy adviser Karl Zinsmeister met yesterday at the White House to discuss the conference.

NEA is going to love that.
That said, and as cold as this may sound to some, I really wish the tormented and demented who have forsaken other avenues and decided to end their lives would just cut to the chase and leave the others, (especially the kids), out of it.
And that wouldn't have anything to do with the medication of tremendous numbers of students--not to mention the general population.
Yes there havve always been people severely in need of medication, who are undeniably clinicly depressed, but it seems tremendous numbers of youngstres are being diagnosed as 'depressed' and medicated when they are only suffering the roller coaster ride of adolescence. They generally don't so much need pills as mentoring to help them sort out their world.
I recall his statement that he would sign a renewal of the original act. There was virtuallly no chance that a renewal of the original act, unmolested, would ever get to his desk. It was fresh in the minds of the Congress that gun control was a lynchpin issue that put many of them in their seats, and the Dems would not have been able to resist adding a bunch of crap on.
Now, though, I will wait and see.
It would be a rare and welcome change if the President called for doing away with the gun-free victim zones.

Here's a FReepmail which some of us received about this subject. Thought you'd be interested:
"Not a follower of Lott myself , I have heard of his writings along a common sense , factual premise that firearms save lives. With that in mind based on personal experience and common sense he and I agree.
When one calls 911 a individual with a "gun" is needed...... I don't like takeout myself so I don't call for a 30 minutes or less delivery of some form of security.
The media's phobic hysterics regarding firearms of any kind is a complete socialist success to make common Americans believe they are above violence and civilized to a point they don't need to worry about predators, bandits, murderers etc etc ........
But as we know it's not about safety or civilizations evolution it's about the incremental disarming of the general populace. A populace that can stop the bosnification of these united states of America.........a polite, educated, armed and law abiding intelligent adult is that glue which keeps this nation whole in my humble opinion .
Thus ......I will "stick" to my guns regardless of any presstitutes or polidiots pandering to the chicken little's of our world.
Hope ya'll are all well !"
