A fugitive gunman accused of killing a Florida sheriff’s deputy was shot 68 times by SWAT team officers who found him hiding in the woods, according to autopsy results.
Police fired 110 shots at Angilo Freeland, 27, the target of a massive manhunt in central Florida following the shooting death of Polk County Sheriff’s Deputy Matt Williams Thursday.
“That’s all the bullets we had, or we would have shot him more,” Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd told the Orlando Sentinel newspaper.

If you have done any research on murders, you would find that most murders are commited in the heat of passion and by someone who knew the victim. Most murderers convicted and in prison are not career criminals, but allowed their emotions to get out of hand with the result of taking someone's life. Those who will kill a cop when running from them are much more dangerous to society then those who kill out of anger in the heat of the moment.
In most cases, murder is something that happens in the heat of the moment, and usually to someone who knew the victim. Even in most cases of robbery, the perps usually don't plan to actually shoot, but do so when something triggers a fight/flight response in them. This isn't meant as an excuse, just an explanation. When a violent career offender kills a cop (plus the K-9) in an attempt to flee, then that perp is more dangerous to the public and warrants the massive response from LE. In most instances when a grocer or store employee is shot and killed, unless the perp as already been identified and found to be a multiple felon, there is not the need for such massive force. This may not be the way people wish it to be, but that is the way it is.
Unless a bunch had revolvers, or 1911 types, they didn't even all shoot the magainze dry. 12.5 rounds or so per shooter. For reference Glock 17 holds 17+1 of 9mm, Glock 2 holds 15+1 of .40 S&W. Some had AR type rifles, which hold 20 or 30 rounds of 5.56x41.
If they were using full auto weapons the nine officers could have easily fired 110 rounds in one, one second burst of fire. Hardly a misuse of force.
All true and I'm well aware of these firearms. I heard the firing live on the air during an interview. I did not hear full auto fire (and yes I know what it sounds like). As to the type of weapons I have not seen any kind of report. I realize that you are not arguing with me but I was pointing out to some id..umm misinformed poster that reloading did not take place and that they did not 'run out of bullets' per-se just that they had (probably) emptied their weapons.

I was with you up to that point. IMHO, there is no difference between a thug who shoots a store employee for a few bucks and the one who shoots a police officer in an attempt to save his own sorry a$$. In fact the former is likely a greater danger to the public, because he killed when his own life or freedom was not perceived to be at risk.
I was referring to instances in which the perp panics (often because the vic has refused to compy and fights back), not when the perp intentionally shoots an unarmed grocer or store employee. That perp is definately a danger to the public and should warrant a massive police response. And, when I refer to massive I'm talking about situations like this perp in Florida. A large police response to a killing of a grocer or store employee where the perp has panicked would, IMHO, be warranted. My comments shouldn't be construed to mean that I don't think police should respond in large numbers, but was meant as commentary on what usually happens.
I get the feeling he would be welcome in a lot of towns.

On the range I don't think I could empty my (10 round .45) magazine into a target at 7 yards (getting it on the paper), eject, and pop in a fresh mag in under 6 secs. Under combat stress I would probably take longer. I know some people who I've seen do it (on the range at matches) in under 4 secs, but their performance would not be typical, even on a SWAT team

I believe studies have shown 4 rounds per second is the fastest a trained person can fire a SEMI-automatic.
What happened to the "double-tap" method?
In the revolver days ,I think it was fire two shots and evaluate.If you only have six you must be more careful.
Probably the psychological effect of hearing all those shots fired causes any shooter to be more likely to keep firing .Bigger magazines just mean a lot more bullets flying.
With nine shooters in a small area firing 110 shots it is a miracle no officers were hit by friendly fire!!!
I have consistently held the opinion that the same resources ought be used to stop the killer of the convenience store clerk(who is likely unarmed by order of his employer and whose family will get little of the outpouring of community help the police officer gets.)

Killing a police officer carrying out their lawful duties is a worse crime than killing a civilian and it needs a worse punishment. It's not that the officer's personal life is worth more but the arm of the law they represent is. Killing a police officer is an attack on all of us, on civilization itself, not the officer personally. It calls for immediate and permanent removal from the gene pool. The intention is to deter other criminals from trying their luck. 90% of criminals don't really mind doing time in jail, else one visit would be enough. Jail isn't enough.
