WASHINGTON (CNN) -- House Republican leaders mounted an effort to explain their own conduct after the resignation of Rep. Mark Foley and suggested there should be a criminal investigation of Foley's contacts with congressional pages.
A strongly worded statement assailing Foley from the chamber's top three Republicans came as they tried to answer key questions: What did they know and what did they do about it?
Calling the contacts "an obscene breach of trust," the congressmen said in their statement that "[Foley's] immediate resignation must now be followed by the full weight of the criminal justice system."
"The improper communications between Congressman Mark Foley and former House congressional pages is unacceptable and abhorrent," read the statement issued by Majority Leader John Boehner of Ohio, House Speaker J. Dennis Hastert of Illinois and Majority Whip Roy Blunt of Missouri.
ABC News on Friday evening reported details of three exchanges of instant messages sent in 2003 between teenage male pages and someone using the screen name Maf54, which ABC identified as Foley. The congressman's initials are MAF, and he was born in 1954.
In one of those exchanges, Maf54 advises the teen to "strip down." In another, when the teen says he's wearing a T-shirt and shorts, Maf54 replies, "Love to slip them off of you." And in a third, Maf54 asks, "Do I make you a little horny?" (More details) Democrats suggest cover up
The scandal comes just weeks before the November 7 midterm elections, and Republicans were hurriedly trying to find someone to replace Foley. Foley, 53 and single, had been favored to win re-election in the Republican-leaning district running against Democrat Tim Mahoney.
Democrats sought to take advantage of the bad press.

Very correct. You said it so well.
FR is the best site on the net, this rah-rah orthodoxy to Republicans is counter productive.
I'm not suggesting anyone vote for a Dem., but , well you know what I'm saying.
So just what are you looking for?
The article, and my intent in reposting it, is that there is a very clear double standard. The Republican has already resigned over e-mails, and probably faces further consequences.
The dems, who went farther than e-mails, are not only still there, they are in positions of power, and are on a blood-lust.
Not going to happen.
What are you suggesting, that the Republicans indignantly tell the Dems. and the public ---"Hey, you are the ones who love homosexuality"?
Not a good idea .................. even though it's true.
Thank you for that information. The difference is quite important.
What about post # 45???
Out west here, I'm still waiting an answer from Dems over why so little outrage or calls for arrests over the admission of the 30 year old case of Democrat Neil Goldschmidt's sexual abuse of his 14 year old babysitter.
This is going to be totally gross. For the first time, I am worried about the election......... only because of the effect of the old media.
......... no, you just misrepresented it.
I hear you....... but I fear that it is too late.
It's one isolated congressman and there is no cover-up.
Five minutes solid coverage on CNN early this am, with one teensy mention of problems with pages years ago, three or four seconds...no pictures of Barney Frank, nor was his name brought up. And guess what? He's still representing his MA district in Congress. Maybe he apologized. I forget.
Simply........ if I'm looking for anything (as you suggest), I'm looking for someone (such as you) NOT to parrot the description "over friendly emails". Because they were much more than that.
Is that an answer for you!?
"Ceaseless striving for the improvement of the breed..."
Can you expound on this statement a bit? It kind of gives me the creeps.
This is beyond disgusting but the legal aspects at this point doesn't show that he violated any laws. The only way there was a violation of law is if he made an offer of sex to an individual under 16 (DC age of consent, no age variation laws and no further restrictions of gender) and had the intention to carry it out. Without a violation of law the leaders of the GOP could really only do one thing, ask him to stop.
As I wrote in # 65, "It all depends on which emails Hastert saw (and when he saw them). Some of them are supposedly very crude."
I fear the Dems. and the media have just what they always wanted with this.
They're going to talk about this for five solid weeks.
It is not the Repubs who are hypocrites but the stinkin' dems.
