I don't think you are going to find out that any republicans knew about the sexual PM's and hushed this up. I think we are going to find out that some dem operatives set the guy up for a bigger fall in PM's because they figured he would fall for it.The person on the other end of the PM's does not sound like he is turning Foley down...now does he?
They probably hung on to the PM's until now and then gave them to ABC a few weeks out from the election so that the republicans could not get another name on the ballot!
Some dem operative knew about the rumors of Foley being gay and then found out about the strange(but not sexual) email to the page and then set him up for a big pervert fall by getting him online with former pages.
