Platte Canyon High School in Bailey was evacuated early Wednesday afternoon because of a hostage situation with a gunman, Park County emergency dispatchers said.
Dispatchers said there was at least one hostage.
The adjoining middle school was also evacuated.
Jan Howard, a secretary to the superintendent of Park County Schools, said the students were being taken to a safe location and only sheriff's deputies and fire officials were being allowed into the schools.
Authorities said U.S. Highway 285 was closed in Bailey because of the situation.
Jefferson County authorities said deputies, including the SWAT team and bomb squad, from their sheriff's office were on stand-by to assist if called by Park County authorities.

Your stepson's pain will never go away. I will pray for him to find peace. There is no way to understand the Lord's plan for our lives.
The reporter seems perfect for a job in the White House Press Corpse.
These were children. Not trained soldiers or police officers. I think they did the best they could.
If true, this is a big problem. Visitors should not be able to walk right in - there should be an access control point for visitors...
I was with my mom when she died, I know what you mean. It is just something you have to get beyond. He's trying. But he slips back, like all of us who have been touched by death, and that's one of the things about life.
10 years ago if you told me I would be married, the step mom of this family, living in Utah, I would never have believed it. God sort of plucked me from 2,000 miles away to be mom for this family and wife for my hubby, so I know what you mean about not knowing about God's plan for our lives.
Fox is repeating this.
I wasn't implying otherwise. My question was general. In a terrorist situation, what keeps a group of many from going after one or a few, as a group, when their life is in danger?
= = = =
Have often wondered the same thing. As a shrink and a sociologist . . . my explanational ponderings are along the lines of . . .
1. Most individuals are shocked and at least temporarily immobilized and afraid.
2. There's been no coordination ahead of time and the individuals are not confident of a group being able to instantly form and act together.
3. On the 9/11 plane, they were able to coordinate in the back of the plane.
4. Also, in the 9/11 situations, once individuals were aware they weren't going to live anyway, risk became more of a moot issue.
5. In the school hostage situations, other kids are at risk and even asking for group action may be seen as seriously problematic to start with.
6. Realtively few people are good at thinking fast, instantly on their feet in a high risk, very dangerous situation. And, others are not instantly aware of who such sharpies are and whether they are trustworthy to follow, or not.
7. Egos about who's leader and who's follower can get in the way before anything is started.
8. When thought about in the calmness and coolness of normal life, the above can easily be seen to be absurdly counter productive and deadly in a school hostage situation.
9. I would think that schools would do well to have training sessions with staff and even some healthy social star leader kids . . . on a range of creative options and the style of creative thinking likely to be life saving in such situations. I'd guess that too much of what may be taught--IF ANYTHING IS TAUGHT--is overly stereotypic. I hope I'm wrong.
Has this guy been identified yet? Anyone suspicious about how long that seems to be taking?
I think adults want to revert back to child-like, "I don't wanna think about this."
That day is over, and not just because of terrorism.

Indeed.
No ID on the perp yet. I hope that's because the remains have yet to be fully wiped off the walls.
I agree
I'm very suspicious..and his body is still in the school...very strange
How do you get a large group to fight as one though?
= = = =
Following up some more of this in reverse order . . . LOL . . .
I'd suggest, off the top of my head . . .
The alert, watchful, perceptive, skillful, strong ones in the group . . . strong in any useful sense . . .
look around the room and see who else might be alert, perceptive and potentially helpful in any way. Use sign language even if only with the eyes & face.
It's a meager beginning but better than nothing in many situations.
If I had kids 10 or older, I'd coach them in a variety of hypothetical scenarios of various creative options--getting them to brainstorm options first. I'd insure that they had some martial arts training. I might show excerpts of McGiver and talk about them.
I'd train them in talking situations through calmly as well as taking physical action and some cues to use to judge when to apply which.
I'd insure they could watch for signs of someone being on PCP and the implications of that.
I might even train them when walking into a classroom or other school room to ROUTINELY AND METHODICALLY CHECK VARIOUS THINGS OUT:
1. Are there Christians in the group good at praying and hearing God?
2. Where are the exits and how can I insure quickest access to the nearest one?
3. Where are the windows and what sort of glass are they and how do they open?
4. What objects in the room could reasonably and instantly/quickly be used as shields and others as weapons?
5. Who else in the room looks to be alert and capable of quick thinking and effective defensive/offensive actions? Should I talk to them confidentially ahead of time about potential situations and options?
6. Is the authority figure in the room apt to be helpful, a clumsy dork or otherwise a liability?
7. How close to major building entrances/exits is this room? How unsecured, monitored are those entrances/exits?
8. Is there any way to alert authorities from this room even if only by making shocking, startling, gosh awful noise?
9. How many ways could I knock a perpetrator off guard in this room?
10. How many ways could I neutralize a perp in this room?
etc.
I assume you know I'm happy to be available online. My MSN MESSENGER is kaput and I can't uninstall it. After I get that fixed . . . could use that. Until then, email. or Freepmail. I think you have my email.
I'm also happy to coach you as much as seems fitting. Just let me know.

But sometimes you can actively contribute to their becoming thirsty.
And, you can pray that desperate dangerous prayer--GOD, WHATEVER IT TAKES, PLEASE REACH HIM BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE!
