Here's the thing: the Romney haters
are getting desperate because they know a candidate who speaks only to the religious conservatives wouldn't win in the general election. The religous activists who call themselves conservatives want a Bush clone who believes in Christian Socialist nanny-statism, not a Jeffersonian/Reagan Republican. At this stage, it's unlikely that George Foot-In-His-Mouth-Allen or somebody like Rick Santorum or Sam Brownback is going to win the nomination. Governors become President, not Senators or one-issue candidates.
Romney is not perfect. But he is a better choice than McCain and he would be strong in the WOT, which is what people care about.
Another thing. Roe v. Wade isn't going to be overturned any time soon, certainly not under a Democratic administration, which is what we'd get if only the religious activists voted in the general election.
