Didn't "M" admonish James Bond for carrying a Beretta because it lacked stopping power? No, I believe it was the Walther PPK (8mm).

Actually, "M" chewed out Bond and commanded that he turn in his Beretta for the PPK in the begining of "Dr. No." Bond even tried to walk out of "M"'s office with both pistols after the meeting. "M" ordered Bond to leave the Beretta on his desk before he left.

It was a Walther PPK chambered in 7.65mm. or 32ACP Cal. It is a little light in fire power but in professional hands quite effective.
