What happened in 1989?

Webster vs. Reproductive Health Services was a Missouri case in which the SCOTUS ruled 5:4 that the Missouri law stating that life begins at conception, that Missouri state property could not be used for conducting abortions, and that a fetal viability assessment could be required before late term abortions are performed.

Planned Parenthood vs Casey (Pennslyvania 24-hour waiting period, 1992) was another big one.

Since that time, there hasn't been a whole lot until now.

Hey- I just posted on another thread also asking this question: What is the tone of all the ads and campaigning in South Dakota? To an outsider, it is sounding pretty civil, with the pro-life side focusing on women and motherhood being empowering, and the pro-choice side saying they value human life but the law goes too far... Different rhetoric than you normally hear in abortion battles. Is this true? I have a theory that when you have to appeal to actual voters, as opposed to far-away judges, the tone changes...

I don't know. If you look at my FR profile page you'll notice that, like you, I'm in one of the most one-sided states in the nation on this issue. I do know that over 100 South Dakota pro-life physicians have endorsed the law - which would not have happened if it was a significant impediment to maternal health.
