The usual suspects can put their hands over their ears an scream denials all they want. It does them no good. The facts do not change just because the One Issue Freepers do not want to hear them. To win the Presidency you have to be able to build a coalition of different interest groups.TT cannot do this.

His "my way or the highway" mindestindicates he have NO interest in being anything but an Always Angry Bomb thrower. It the same mindset that managed to get Pat Buchanan 1% of the vote in 2000.

Therefore, he is making himself completely irrelevant to any group that actually wants to get some things done.

Immigration is AN issue. IT is NOT THE issue no matter how many manufacture polls various activist groups put together to validate their own opinions. Americans have a number of things they want delt with. A crowd of people who ONLY can scream endlessly about Immigration is NOT going to go anywhere in American politics. You have to be able to build coalitions. TT could be building coalition by leading here but would rather throw bombs at people actually getting things done.

It is the same political mistake McCain made.

You have to be able to build coalitions.

One doesn't do that by being divisive, and it's divisive to try to legalize illegal aliens.

Actually, they have brought the politics of the issue to the point where the house and senate are ready to pass enforcement first bills despite the concerted opposition of the entire dem party and 90% of the power brokers in the rep party. I'd say that they have gotten somewhere, with Tom being entitled to a lion's share of the credit.

As to your other points, of course a party is a coalition and does a bunch of stuff. Some are more important. Some are less important. It's my opinion, this is one of the three or four key issues today. Tom has helped save the republican party from it's short-sighted money interests.

It is the THE issue to those of us in the border states. Our schools here are overrun with illegal aliens who get free lunches and will get financial aid for college while I will have to pay for my daughter through the nose.
