While F135 engines already have logged thousands of successful hours on test stands, Friday's engine start marked the first time the engine had run in the F-35 aircraft.

It will be interesting to see if the F-35 can live up to the hype and can do its various jobs as well or better than its competition or the aircraft it is to replace.
Personally, I'll be glad when it's operational and the pilots and crews re-name it. Lightning II? Is the best they could come up with?

The Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II completed its first series of engine runs on Monday afternoon, culminating in a full-afterburner test that unleashed 40,000 pounds of thrust Great Scott!!! That's not a jet engine, that's a ROCKET.
If you can't hit the enemy with a missile, turn that engine on him and just kick him out of the sky.
Shalom.

the Navy has never deployed a single engine aircraft from a carrier, and I'm not sure they should start now.
