Mighty F-35 Lightning 2 Engine Roars To Life by Staff Writers Fort Worth TX (SPX) Sep 21, 2006 The Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II completed its first series of engine runs on Monday afternoon, culminating in a full-afterburner test that unleashed 40,000 pounds of thrust - the most ever from a jet-fighter engine. The testing began on Friday, Sept. 15, when Chief Pilot Jon Beesley moved a cockpit switch to the "run" position and brought the Pratt and Whitney [NYSE: UTX] F135 engine to life.

Is that Steve Jobs in the cockpit...

Looks like Jack from Jack in the Box in this one. ;-)

This thing will probably include an IPod for the price per unit.

Here's a pic with some goodies on display.

What engine did they use in the JSF X-planes?

Why the change now?

Just wondering...

I'll never forget the photo of an A-10 that a pilot flew back to base in Saudi Arabia and landed safely in the Gulf War that was literally shot to pieces. How it kept flying was a real mystery but it did.

A NEW THOUGHT ON PREEMPTIVE MANEUVERS--We should tell the Iranian Hitler wannabe that we only need this new plane to try and locate the huge nuclear bomb that has turned up missing from our arsenal of thousands of nuclear weapons...and we think it may have been smuggled into Iran by citizens unhappy with his regime and its intent on developing nuclear weapons. And even though we only think this is merely a negotiating tool, it is a little curious why they only gave us the cell phone number of the cell phone attached to the bomb.

We could ask the little jerk if he would prefer political asylum or some guarantee that we wouldn't publish the cell phone number of the cell phone on the bomb over the internet upon his arrival home...

NOW DO YOU WANT TO STOP ENRICHING URANIUM BEFORE WE TALK......

Do you know if the fighting characteristics of the F-35 are going to approach or be as good as the F-22? The F-22 reports out so far have been phenominal.

unfortunately I think that is what the little guy wants... he seems to have a napoleonic complex mixed with complete religious fervor and I honestly wonder if he would not like to take on the big bad U.S. (and Israel by proxy) to solidify his status in the Arab world and/or in the heaven he believes in.

This is an awesome aircraft but I question it's viability as a close air support airframe due to the expense, speed, and costs per target in comparison to some older aircraft (primarily the A-10) already in the inventory.

From my techno-military-geek readings the F-22 was built to own the skies. The F-35 is supposed to be a jack of all trades.

I would put my money on the Raptor to win that matchup.

Too bad this plane wasn't available when Imanutajihad came over to the states. We could have done the old "Lightening vs. Evil Bad Guy" like we did in WW II with Yomamoto (if my history serves me right?).

That sounds right from what I've read about the F-22 also. I guess the testing by the squadron in Alaska that's going on now has been nothing but successful.

Are you suggesting that this plane is too fast to provide good ground support?

close to it but I would suspect the F-22 will hold the edge, it has been well received to date. hasn't had an opportunity for actual combat but should do just fine when and if opportunity presents itself.

Are you saying that the guys at Elmendorf are testing the F-22? My daughter and her husband live in Eagle River just outside of Elmendorf and I was up there helping them rebuild the deck on the back of their house for 3 weeks in early August and I kept hearing fighter jets screaming around the area quite frequently... were these the F-22s? Does anybody know?
