The attorney for the Maine couple accused of kidnapping their pregnant daughter called the incident a terrible family misunderstanding.
NewsCenter 5's Rhondella Richardson reported Monday that Nicholas and Lola Kampf of North Yarmouth, Maine, appeared by a video monitor in a New Hampshire courtroom.
They are accused of tying up their 19-year-old pregnant daughter, throwing her in the trunk of their car and heading to New York for an abortion on Friday. Officials said that the couple did not approve of the unborn baby's father.
"Both individuals continued to threaten to kill the victim, the father of the unborn child and his family," prosecutor Ryan McFarland said. "If you read in the affidavit, she was tied up. The officer writes in his affidavit that the ties were released when she got into Salem, (N.H.)." Katelyn Kampf was able to escape and call police when they stopped at a shopping plaza in Salem. She told officials in Maine that her parents assaulted her after she told them that she was pregnant.
Defense attorney Mark Sisti said that it was a misunderstanding.
"They did not attack or terrorize Katelyn. It was cordial conversation in the car," Sisti said. Nicholas and Lola Kampf were each held on $100,000 bail, and the couple has been ordered not to have contact with their daughter.

The perps live in a nice, large, expensive house.
Reme is black, looks like a thug, is in jail, and his family lives in a shack.
So yes, if your suspicions are that it's a race and class thing, you're correct.
Doesn't change a thing. Grandma and Grandpa are still scum.
I just can't see pulling up to a mall, opening the trunk, untieing her, and telling her to go to the bathroom and get back. That part makes no sense to me.
It is shocking. I'm sorry that my suspicions proved correct.
If found guilty, they should be given maximum sentences.
and have you noticed the "dad's" eyes??? are they beady and weird looking or what???
That's OK. I first saw the story 2 days ago and was waiting for a picture just like you. I figured right away it was probably racial just like you. And, it was.
Cindy, I don't think you're payig attention. The grandparents weren't saving the baby. They wanted to kill it because they don't like the father.
I wonder if the race of the young woman's boyfriend is the real issue.....lots of Somalians up in Maine, I hear.....
No. I'm with yall . I understand perfectly what happened :')
Oh... a hate crime?
They were trying to murder their granchild! The baby is not only this Reme loser's baby, but also their daughter's baby. I hope she keeps THAT in mind.
I hear you. A very evil act. I wouldn't be asking them to baby sit anytime soon but hopefully after they calm down (it sounds lije a very emotionsl family) that they will thank God that it didn't happen.
"if it had been my parents, I would walked away"
Dad was armed, he was planning to murder his grandchild. And, who knows, maybe his daughter too.
In an article in Sundays paper, said the parents are business people.
I have owned my business for 40 years. It takes common sense to run a business as well as knowledge.
I just can't figure this couple, seems to be a lot wrong here.
Oh man, and I stuck up for the unknown (at the time) father yesterday, in another thread. I wasn't willing to assume so badly of him, but the other poster was right. Loser scum. (Reme, not the other poster!)
That doesn't change the fact that mommy and daddy didn't want her to have a little black baby on her hip. Underneath, yankees are usually way more prejudiced than most southerners. But it shows through, sometimes.
Yeah. A lot wrong. I meant after she was safe. I would have just walked away and they wouldn't have seen me again until they had a change of heart regarding their grandchild.
Sorry........But they look more like brother and sister.
