The attorney for the Maine couple accused of kidnapping their pregnant daughter called the incident a terrible family misunderstanding.
NewsCenter 5's Rhondella Richardson reported Monday that Nicholas and Lola Kampf of North Yarmouth, Maine, appeared by a video monitor in a New Hampshire courtroom.
They are accused of tying up their 19-year-old pregnant daughter, throwing her in the trunk of their car and heading to New York for an abortion on Friday. Officials said that the couple did not approve of the unborn baby's father.
"Both individuals continued to threaten to kill the victim, the father of the unborn child and his family," prosecutor Ryan McFarland said. "If you read in the affidavit, she was tied up. The officer writes in his affidavit that the ties were released when she got into Salem, (N.H.)." Katelyn Kampf was able to escape and call police when they stopped at a shopping plaza in Salem. She told officials in Maine that her parents assaulted her after she told them that she was pregnant.
Defense attorney Mark Sisti said that it was a misunderstanding.
"They did not attack or terrorize Katelyn. It was cordial conversation in the car," Sisti said. Nicholas and Lola Kampf were each held on $100,000 bail, and the couple has been ordered not to have contact with their daughter.

Yeah...most of my "cordial family conversations" involve rope, duct tape and a loaded .22 rifle. (/sarcasm)
Why would they do this and then untie her and let her go into a shopping mall?
More facts are needed but I have a sneaking suspicion about these people and their motives.
Nicolas and Lola Kamp..the UNFIT GRANDPARENTS.
I wondered about that, too. Bipolar? Or maybe they realized that even the brutes at an abortion clinic might take it somewhat amiss if the patient were brought in from the trunk of a car all tied up with ropes, so they hoped to "reason" with their daughter.
"What we're dealing with here is a terrible family tragedy with some unfortunate misunderstandings and some overreaction, perhaps on all sides _ but not an attempt to terrorize anybody," he said.
The Kampfs were upset that their daughter was pregnant by a man who is now in jail, police said, and before leaving Maine on Friday they had an argument at the parents' home.

Police say when they made a stop in New Hampshire, she was untied so she could use a store bathroom.

There's a sale at Penny's!
Cordial conversation? "Hey, hon, you don't mind being bound and locked in the trunk do you?" "Why, no, Mom & Dad, whatever you think is best." Give me a friggen break.
According to police, the incident began at the Kampfs home. Investigators say an argument broke out after Katelyn told her parents she was pregnant.
The father of the child, Reme Johnson, is currently behind bars at the Androscoggin County jail serving a 6 month sentence for receiving stolen goods.
Police say Nicholas and Lola Kampf insisted their daughter get an abortion. They were on the way to New York, when Katelyn managed to escape in Salem, New Hampshire and call 911.http://www.wlbz2.com/news/article.aspx?storyid=41781
The Irony of it is, the Parents did not want their daughter to have a baby by a man who recieved stolen property and is behind bars, but yet now they are in Jail themselves, held on $100,000 bail for kidnapping and threatening to kill.
The Daughter is 19... certainly an adult.
I know. Usually they look mean. These two look like just regular middle aged people.
I know some of you will disagree but if it had been my parents, I would walked away but I wouldn't have pressed charges. This was an evil thing to do but they have been given a second chance and maybe a blessing if the daughter can ever forgive them.
Usually a grandparent would be against having their grandchild aborted...I think!
Cindy, If my parents had put me in a trunk at 19 years of age, for any reason and held me against my will, I think I would of been a bit alarmed, and probably afraid of them. These Parents have come unhinged.
At the typical clinic, I think there is a standard surcharge for this situation.....
