YnetNews ^ | 9/17/06

"We consider that the new statements represent a retreat from what went before," Brotherhood deputy leader Mohammed Habib told Reuters.

"We can consider them a sufficient apology, even if we had wanted the pope to outline his ideas and vision of Islam," said Habib, whose opposition Islamist group has inspired similar movements across the Arab world.

The Pope said he was "deeply sorry" At the anger caused by his remarks on Islam and said a quote he used from a medieval text about holy wars did not reflect his personal thoughts.

My translation of the Pope's "apology":

"Sorry you are so upset about my historical quotation (get over it already)"

Reminds me of that Sienfeld episode: the apology. George is obsessed with getting an apology from an acquaintance....Would make a great parody skit to substitute a muslim in George's place....

Your right about the lack of support for the Vatican. The Vatican may not have caved in but sure on back peddling. I am afraid that because of Islam's tendency to go violent when even a hint of an insult is realized, the Christian world feels intimidated. A good example of lingering intimidation after the fact was the way Theo Van Gogh was murdered in Holland not so long ago by an Islamic fanatic. Can you imagine the worlds Christians getting fed up and playing the religion card as well? Would it be nice if we can all just get along and turn our energies in a productive direction?

This reaction of the Muslims is plain stupid. The Pope is Catholic; you are not. He believes he is right and that you are wrong.

You are assuming intelligence, logic and reason on the part of these fanatics.

Didn't Islam sack Constantinople numerous times and eventually succeed in taking and holding it?

Didn't Islam slay thousands of Byzantine citizens who refused to convert to Islam?

Quoting a 13th Century Byzantine Emperor who thought Islam was spread by the sword is an historic fact. The Emperor was actually living in Greece because the Muslims had already taken over Constantinople and most of the Byzantine empire's territory already.

The socialist/main stream media is trying to paint picture the Pope buckled under pressure by Islam. This is a lie.

You must've missed his retreat in this quote:

a quote he used from a medieval text about holy wars did not reflect his personal thoughts.

Hope that cleared it up for you.

Because they know all these riots and attacks will and have backfired on them

Backfired how? I don't see that anywhere.

I think the Pope was right on.

Yep! And the izzies proved his point by going wacky.

Wait until the islamic world realizes that the Pope's apology is essentially that "he is sorry the izzies are irrational, evil, and inhuman...and that they are offended by the truth."

The Pope's so called apology reminded me of something we used to do as kid's. We'd call a sibling "Stupid", Mom would say apologize, and we'd say, "I'm sorry you're stupid."

The Pope called Islam "violent", they demanded an apology, and he basically said "I'm sorry you're violent." (of course, their reaction just reinforced his original statement.)

Non-answer. There is no backlash or backfiring happening.

And your original post is nullified seeing as how the Muslim Brotherhood have changed their minds and said it still isn't sufficient.

I have truly had it with these mohammeden freaks!! It seems to me that NOTHING short of the Holy Father submitting to Islam will be good enough for them!

The man said he was sorry that what he quoted insulted the sensibilities of some moslems. I am sorry for that too. It truly pains me that there are lunatics in this world who cannot handle the truth regarding the faith they practice and feel it necessary to threaten, maim and kill anyone who has the nerve to say anything that they decide is insulting to their fanatical and satanic cult.

There...I feel a bit better. Just a bit.

Our home is being blessed this afternoon. A good friend of the family, Father Serafim, will be arriving soon and will do the blessing. I look forward to discussing this issue with him. He a a wise and good priest. He actually recently returned from three weeks in the Holy Land. I will be interested to get his perspective on all of this...

You are trying to be reasonable with barbarians who don't understand that you have a right to believe what you want and express what you believe. They want to make everyone believe in the crap they put out. And, if you don't believe it they will kill you.

I'm thinking more and more that ol' Tom had it absolutely correct:

"If the enemy shall put to death, torture or otherwise ill-treat any of the hostages in their hands,... recourse must be had to retaliation as the sole means of stopping the progress of human butchery, and... for that purpose punishments of the same kind and degree [should] be inflicted on an equal number of their subjects taken by us till they shall be taught due respect to the violated rights of nations."
--Thomas Jefferson: Report to Congress, 1776. Papers 1:403 Re: Islamic barbarity on the high seas

And more recently, how "Black Jack" Pershing actually handled the mohammedans when they got uppity.

But, amazingly, some Europeans have, Berlusconi and Merkel from Germany the most clear, the former saying the Pope is a great man and a man of peace. What about our own president?
