Why do we have an embassy in Syria? How many times has our embassy been attacked there?
Because we have diplomatic relations with Syria. They have an embassy in the US. Currently, we have a Charge' in Damascus, not an ambassador. We pulled our ambassador in 2004 to protest the Syrian involvement in the assassination of Lebanon's ex-Prime Minister Rafik Hariri.
