Unless it was all a sham and they all allowed themselves to be killed for the good pr. That's a hard sell.
The dead guys didn't necessarily know it was PR, if that is what went down.I do not insist that that is how it happened but I do think it is as likely a scenario as any other with those people. Read the history of the Caliphate and the Mamelukes and the Assassins and court life and death in the various sultanates and emirates of the past right up to the very recent past and, in Iraq and Syria and Iran, arguably right up to the present. Murder and intrigue were more highly developed than even in late Rome or Byzantium. No agent or hireling ever actually knew what his employer's end was or even who the actual employer was.
