What is Keitel's politics?....I thought he was a flaming lib?

I've not got a clear read on him.
I heard him on radio a few years ago doing work promoting an event
at the USS Intrepid in NYC (sort of a "Fleet Week"?).
He recalled how he joined the USMC at age 16...and spent the
first nights in his bunk crying himself to sleep, asking himself
"How did I ever let myself get in this place?".

BUT...he said the Marines was the best thing for him and gave him
discipline he used in his acting career.
