Ahmadinejad calls for purge of liberal teachers
By NASSER KARIMI

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) - Iran's hardline President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad called Tuesday for a purge of liberal and secular teachers from the country's universities, the official Islamic Republic News Agency reported in another step back to 1980s-style radicalism.

"Today, students should shout at the president and ask why liberal and secular university lecturers are present in the universities," the agency quoted Ahmadinejad as saying during a meeting with a group of students.

Ahmadinejad complained that changes in the country's universities were difficult to accomplish and that the country's educational system had been affected by secularism for the last 150 years, but said "such a change has begun."

Earlier this year, Iran retired dozens of liberal university professors and teachers. And last November, Ahmadinejad's administration for the first time named a cleric to head the country's oldest university in Tehran amid protests by students over the appointment.

The developments followed a campaign promise by Ahmadinejad for a more Islamic-oriented country. He took office last August.

Since then, Ahmadinejad also has been replacing pragmatic veterans in the government with former military commanders and inexperienced religious hardliners.

Ahmadinejad's aim appears to be to install a new generation of rulers who will revive the fundamentalist goals pursued in the 1980s under the late Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, father of the 1979 Islamic revolution in Iran.

In the early 1980s, shortly after the revolution, Iran sacked hundreds of liberal and leftist university teachers and students.

I generally don't agree with anything he says, but...

I suppose then the extreme conservatives would be those who believe we should have remained as subjects of King George ...

I wonder is the lefties will now give him the attention he is due, now that he has attacked them in their home bases, rather than celebrate his ability to screw up the Bush agenda as a proxy....

They'll keep their mouths shut just like they never speak out aginst Iran's degradation of women.

Good morning.
"...students should shout at the president and ask why liberal and secular university lecturers are present in the universities"

Wow! Just like here, but for different reasons.

What he is talking about as "Liberalism" is freedom to oppose hard line Islamic law. Our Liberalism seeks just the opposite.

They'll be shouting at you, Mr. President. But what they will have to say will be something different.

But this is good news. We want them to be stupider. We want them to cancel free inquiry and march backwards in time. Why not disband the universities altogether, Mr. President?--build mosques and madrassas instead. And hang all those secular scientists and engineers. Allah will provide you the bomb.

It's an old communist ploy to take the name of something that describes the direct opposite of who they are or what they are.

LOL.....Nope.....

Looks to me like they want to go back to President George.........Washington that is....

LOL......

Perhaps that will happen, but we also become a second rate international power as well...Which would suit them just fine....Less complications...

Our Liberalism seeks just the opposite.

If the people who call themselves Democrats in the U.S suddenly found out what their party really is, they would all become independents from the reality shock.

The Democrat party today is all designed around the demonetization of the Republican Party. It is ignorant of any other goal. It has no center, no real purpose or direction.

Even they do not know what they are. But they do know that they are not on the right, because right is bad.

What they are is stupid.

Did anyone read the book "Reading Lolita in Tehran" by Azar Nafisi 2004 Random House Books? It's a very interesting read about a group of Islamic women in Iran secretly getting together to study and read classic literature like 'Lolita' 'The Great Gatsby' etc... which are banned by the Islamic Republic. What we take for educational granted in the USA these repressed women took on dangers just to enrich their lives with great works of literature. So the so-called professor-like Ahmadinejad is more like a repressor in banning books of learning. You liberals should be extroadinarily grateful for the freedoms you have here and stop trashing the USA... fools.

He understands the demographics - those mullahs aren't getting any younger, and as it stands right now the young people there would be pleased to hang him from a lamppost.

There is something eerily familar sounding in this story, but I can't quite place it. Has it already been posted under a different title, or something?

That's unfair. It's like asking if Ahmadinejad has ever called for the destruction of Israel.

Ahmadinejad is against classical liberalism (i.e. free market economy and freedom of speech etc.) and if he purges these university teachers it will speed up the economic collapse of Iran as the students will be like the students in Saudi. He is just doing what Stalin and Mao did. This is just a way to hasten the coming of the 12:th Imam by increasing the chaos in his own country.

Meanwhile, liberal professors at U.S. colleges give Ahmadinejad a standing ovation.
