Ahmadinejad calls for purge of liberal teachers
By NASSER KARIMI

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) - Iran's hardline President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad called Tuesday for a purge of liberal and secular teachers from the country's universities, the official Islamic Republic News Agency reported in another step back to 1980s-style radicalism.

"Today, students should shout at the president and ask why liberal and secular university lecturers are present in the universities," the agency quoted Ahmadinejad as saying during a meeting with a group of students.

Ahmadinejad complained that changes in the country's universities were difficult to accomplish and that the country's educational system had been affected by secularism for the last 150 years, but said "such a change has begun."

Earlier this year, Iran retired dozens of liberal university professors and teachers. And last November, Ahmadinejad's administration for the first time named a cleric to head the country's oldest university in Tehran amid protests by students over the appointment.

The developments followed a campaign promise by Ahmadinejad for a more Islamic-oriented country. He took office last August.

Since then, Ahmadinejad also has been replacing pragmatic veterans in the government with former military commanders and inexperienced religious hardliners.

Ahmadinejad's aim appears to be to install a new generation of rulers who will revive the fundamentalist goals pursued in the 1980s under the late Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, father of the 1979 Islamic revolution in Iran.

In the early 1980s, shortly after the revolution, Iran sacked hundreds of liberal and leftist university teachers and students.

I am still wondering how American liberals and feminists can support countries like this... they're doing exactly what they claim "Bushitler" and the conservatives are trying to do to the US (but aren't actually).

Suicidal.

Isn't it more likely he's calling for the firing of non-Muslim teachers? I don't really know how the American liberal/conservative dividing line would play out here, but I think that anyone who espouses Western values in any sense contrary to the Koran is up for the chop (as it were).

All classes other than "Islamic Studies" will be eliminated.

Well, they still have to have classes like 'Contemporary Case Studies of Camel Management', 'Back Hair Management: How outsourcing can save time', and 'Remembering the name of that forth wife'. Traditions still remain. /snide

Don't waste your time wondering. It like trying to understand a serial killer. They are just nuts. Just learn how to defeat them.

This one ought to get the attention of the MSM and the liberal profs in universities everywhere. If they don't get the point now they are living in a parallel universe. Which we knew already.

"OMG! Ahmadinejad has finally done something that the Democrats will find extreme."

No, actually what the libs are saying is that Imawhackjob is doing what Bush would like to do. They're trying to say that Bush and Imawhackjob are the same... therefore, we're no better than Iran. No outrage, no being upset with Imawhackjob, just trying to find a way to turn it on the president.

They are some very sick twisted people.

Aren't many in that country. About half the population is fundy moslem, half liberal moslem. Fractions of other things.

But they will blame Bush for it.

For the Western liberal, every new atrocity from one of our enemies is not their fault: They were forced into it by our "aggressive" behavior. No one has free will except us.

"I don't really know how the American liberal/conservative dividing line would play out here, "

You may have to think back to our own history - The concepts of individual rights and democracy were liberal values when we were breaking away from King George.

True....The terms have been muddied by politics over time.

There are now blurred distinctions in both camps.

I find it interesting when Libertarians call themselves the true conservatives, for example.

The labels are all invalid it seems....

Another good example is the Republican party. Republicans are really old classic liberals. We took the democrats positions and beat them, fair and square by taking their issues.

This forced the Democrats further left and now they are so far left they have fallen off the chart....LOL!

This left a political vacuum for conservatives to fill on the right. It will be interesting to watch as all this shakes out. Sorta like playing musical chairs. The loser will not have a place to sit.

""Liberal" in a true sense is someone who believes in individual rights and free market capitalism."

Exactly, Democrats have perverted the meaning of the word by calling themselves "liberals". They are about as liberal as Stalin was liberal.

One rule, one idea...one MULLAH! Jimmy Carter, tell us again what the common ground is for co-existing with the ISLAMIC MUSLIM TERRORISTS who want to rule the world, their way or no way?? Carter says "Talk, talk, talk! Sit down and reason with them" He certainly found out what their talk was all about when his rescue planes went down in flames during his presidency and many Americans died then and there. So says Hassan Nussallah, head of Hezbullah..."Yes, we kill their innocents and this is legal religiously and logically."
Osama bin Ladin says.."We will continue on. There is no limit on our actions! Even to kill children is good. You stop the generation at the beginning!" This is the threat...a so called "religion" a way of life based on killing. Everyone dies who doesn't believe the MUSLIM THINKING!

Since Iran has now declared itself "Among all the governments in the world, the only legitimate government endorsed by the Almighty is the Islamic Republic of Iran", it follows that if Iran succeeds in its goals of worldwide conquest that liberals here will be endangered in the coming years and decades. First this regime destroys all the satellite dishes, imprison all the dissidents, now oust the "liberal" teachers and professors; tomorrow the bomb and then the whole world. Ahmadinejad is on a roll.
