As a Norwegian by marriage, I have had to learn to like lutefisk. It wasn't easy, doncha know, then. I still get some funny looks when I sprinkle tabasco on it.

But that lefse, then...it's not too bad of a deal.

Uff da, der's an excuse now fer more funnin' aroun'.

Top 10 USES for Lutefisk

10. For a Remake of the 1958 movie "The Blob".
9. It's more disgusting than manure, for the "Burning bag on the front porch" trick.
8. To give your home that Scandinavian "Holiday Scent".
7. Toss lutefisk under the porch to get rid of skunks. (CAUTION: May attract Norwegians!)
6. To get "the taste out of your mouth" after eating pumpkin pie.
5. For a Scandinavian version of Jello Wrestling.
4. Put it in your shoes. It hides foot odor, cushions your heel and puts a spring in your step!
3. For an earthquake detector. (the only time lutefisk STOPS quivering is during an earthquake)
2. If you are filming a documentary, "The Norwegian Bachelor Farmers" you can use lutefisk to lure them out of their houses.

And the number one USE for Lutefisk...
1. The odor will rid your house of relatives, rodents and other unwanted pests.

One more Ole :-)

Ole bought a mule and took it home. When he tried to put it into the barn, the mule's ears hit the top of the doorway and the mule refused to enter the barn.

Sven stopped by, and he and Ole started discussing ways to get the mule into the barn. Ole said, "Vell, I'll yust have to yack up da barn and add a little to the valls to make it taller."

Sven thought for a minute and offered, "Vell, you haf a dirt floor, vhy don't you yust dig out a little."

"Nah, dat von't help any!" said Ole, "It's his ears that's too long, not his legs!"

You had to mention lefse, didn't you! Makes me hungry. Here's Mrs. Olson's lefse site, with a home recipe, lots of new original ways to serve lefse [lefse breakfast burritos? lefse stir fry wraps? what is the world coming to!], plus a generous supply of Ole, Lena and Lutefisk jokes.

Glad you are already halfway there or more with a Norwegian heritage! You get to sample all the culinary treats we had, like a nicely boiled potato.

I am all of Norwegian extract, from Minnesota with all family coming from Norway. Guess that makes me a Native American. Mom's side of the family is filled with Ole's and Ingomar's and Helga's and my great great great grandparents were Herold or Olav, Gustav, Eric, Knut or maybe Bob.

Dad's side of the family was not so full of great anythings, just a lot of guys not important enough to be remembered even by their kids, but guys who liked to vacation in the southern countries in the winter a lot, and maybe raise a rukus or two with the locals.

But my wife is pure Polish, born in France as the Germans invaded the town her parents were in. So I am used to lots of lefsa while growing up and plenty of pierogi now. Hmm, wonder how pirogis would be stuffed with lutefisk. Now that would be really something.

na zdrowie
