Norway's largest synagogue received an ominous warning last November that it would be one of two targets of terrorist attacks in Oslo. The threats came in conjunction with the arrests in Italy of several members of an alleged terror group.
"I can confirm that we received information that an attack was planned against the synagogue," Anne Sender of The Mosaic Religious Community in Norway (Det Mosaiske Trossamfund, DMT) told newspaper VG on Monday.
Sender said the threats were so credible and alarming that they were taken "very seriously," and the synagogue's security went on high alert. She wouldn't say who provided the information to DMT, nor would Norwegian intelligence officials comment on the terror threat.
VG reported, however, that the threats came just as police in Italy were rounding up several members of an Algerian-linked group, GSPC, believed to be tied to al-Qaida. Two of the members reportedly had checked airline ticket prices to Norway just before they were arrested.
The two also are believed to have been in Norway earlier, in 2004, using false identity documents they obtained in France. Police believe they were in contact with several persons in Oslo who support the GSPC.
Once source told VG that two Norwegian Muslims and a third person would take part in attacks on two terrorist targets in Oslo. One of the targets was the synagogue, located on Bergstien in the capital's St Hanshaugen district.
The other alleged target wasn't revealed.

This is a message that bears repeating, no matter where you live in the world: Your assistance is needed in preventing terrorist acts.
It's a fact that certain kinds of activities can indicate terrorist plans that are in the works, especially when they occur at or near high profile sites or places where large numbers of people gather--like government buildings, military facilities, utilities, bus or train stations, major public events. If you see or know about suspicious activities, like the ones listed below, please report them immediately to the proper authorities. In the United States, that means your closest Joint Terrorist Task Force, located in an FBI Field Office. In other countries, that means your closest law enforcement/counterterrorism agency.
Surveillance: Are you aware of anyone video recording or monitoring activities, taking notes, using cameras, maps, binoculars, etc., near key facilities/events?
Suspicious Questioning: Are you aware of anyone attempting to gain information in person, by phone, mail, email, etc., regarding a key facility or people who work there?
Tests of Security: Are you aware of any attempts to penetrate or test physical security or procedures at a key facility/event?
Acquiring Supplies: Are you aware of anyone attempting to improperly acquire explosives, weapons, ammunition, dangerous chemicals, uniforms, badges, flight manuals, access cards or identification for a key facility/event or to legally obtain items under suspicious circumstances that could be used in a terrorist attack?
Suspicious Persons: Are you aware of anyone who does not appear to belong in the workplace, neighborhood, business establishment or near a key facility/event?
"Dry Runs": Have you observed any behavior that appears to be preparation for a terrorist act, such as mapping out routes, playing out scenarios with other people, monitoring key facilities/events, timing traffic lights or traffic flow, or other suspicious activities?
Deploying Assets: Have you observed abandoned vehicles, stockpiling of suspicious materials, or persons being deployed near a key facility/event?
If you answered yes to any of the above...if you have observed any suspicious activity that may relate to terrorism...again, please contact the Joint Terrorist Task Force or law enforcement/counterterrorism agency closest to you immediately. Your tip could save the lives of innocent people, just like you and yours.

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "Osama bin Laden's deputy, Ayman al-Zawahri, urged Muslims to intensify their resistance against the U.S. and warned of new terror strikes in a video aired by CNN early Monday on the fifth anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks. Al-Zawahir said the Persian Gulf and Israel would be al-Qaida's next targets.
The film was the latest in a flurry of al-Qaida videos released ahead of the anniversary. But unlike the others, it appeared to be new with references to Israel's bombardment of Lebanon this summer and the capture of Israeli soldiers by Hezbollah and Palestinian militants in Gaza.

The video shows the Egyptian-born Al-Zawahri dressed in white and seated in front of a wall of bookshelves.
"Your leaders are hiding from you the true extent of the disaster," he said. "And the days are pregnant and giving birth to new events, with Allah's permission and guidance."
Al-Zawahri criticized the West for supplying Israel with weapons,and called on the Muslim world "to rush with everything at its disposal to the aid of its Muslim brothers in Lebanon and Gaza.""

Gold and oil drops reflect decreased tensions that the US may launch a military attack against Iran to stop/slow its nuclear program. Both commodities reflect the degree of worry over an unstable world.
