I'll bet 90% of the people in the country are within a 2 hour drive of a short track where they still race "stock" cars. I'm in Yankeeland, New England, and there are 3 within an hour of me.
Of course, the truly stock cars are boring, I like the modifieds.

I'm within earshot of Michigan International Speedway but I still like going to a Saturday night race on dirt.
I love watching the sprint cars come out of the turns with their real tires smokin and the front wheels dangling.

Lime Rock is a little drive from me, but I enjoy going there every so often to catch some of the "minor league" races.

The local drag strip is also a good place to go to see what the one guy working at night out of his garage can do with a stock vehicle. Drag racing accommodates all ranges of budgets better than any form of racing. The more you spend, the faster you go. They have head to head elimination series and bracket series racing where you essentially race yourself.
If you have young wanna be racers, drag racing is also relatively safe in the sportsman and bracket classes compared to oval or road racing. I let my son race in the sportsman class and wouldn't consider letting him on the local dirt track in a stock car.
