You would think the FAA would insist of specific runway numbers that shouldn't sound similar.

"thirty-five romeo" and "thirty-five lima" aren't similar.
But then LEX doesn't have parallel runways, so that doesn't seem to be a factor today.

"thirty-five romeo" and "thirty-five lima" aren't similar. No, they aren't; but that is NOT how they are referred to. Correct runway phraseology is "Runway three five right" and "Runway three five left"
