Like fedoras - it's never coming back. No one wants the discomfort of a suit and tie, the expense of that wardrobe (no longer explicitly comp'd by employers), or the dry cleaning bills.

I'm not sure when hats bit the dust. Some suggest that images of JFK, who rarely wore a hat, had a lot to do with killing that standard. My father was no fashion horse - and lagged far behind the times, giving up hats in the early 70's.

I can understand certain positions that would require it, but we never interfaced with customers, just one another. Yes, it was a waste of money.

My wife loves the old hats, and wished more men would wear them to work like long ago. I would, but I can't find one to match my boxers. Ahhh, the joys of working from home...

There are also economic and comfort factors. When guys wear suits the air conditioning needs to be turned down. Thus creating a chilling experience for the less clothed women. Long live casual everyday!

Maybe so...but I wear them quite a lot.
I have quite a collection...my fave being a circa 1953 Chocolate brown Champ Featherweight. Very dapper.

One never knows what is coming back. Maybe the image below is what the typical conscientious young career man of 2050 will look like on his way into the office wearing coat, tie and hat.

Our son just transferred from an Arizona branch of his company to the Manhattan one...He had to buy a whole new wardrobe, and a quite formal dressy one. Some of these attitudes may be regional, not just generational.
