Best and worst commercials of the year
MSNBC ^ | Aug 22, 2006 | Gael Fashingbauer Cooper

Posted on 08/22/2006 6:50:44 PM PDT by indcons

Only one commercial can top the sheer hatred our readers have for the winner of this year's worst-commercial contest. Yes, only creepy, toenail-snapping Digger the Dermatophyte is more hated than the horrendous repetition that is this year's winning loser, the HeadOn headache remedy commercial.

In case you haven't seen it (you can find it on YouTube, but really, why would you want to?), the commercial is as insanely simple as it is annoying. A female voice repeats "HeadOn: Apply directly to the forehead!" three times as a blissed-out smug woman rolls what appears to be a Bonne Bell LipSmacker on her head.

What in the name of a glue stick in disguise is going on there? First off, does anyone believe that this works any better than, say, rubbing your head with your hand? Who decided that a commercial where only the product name and tagline are repeated over and over was good advertising? What kind of drugs is the model in the ad actually on? And does anyone know anyone who has ever, ever used this product, or seen it for sale anywhere outside these ads?

Make sure that someone records it and put it on Youtube. Then ping all of us.

Is that from an episode of XMC?

I heard George Carlin use it a long time ago.

I am a big fan of your photoshopped images. This one is a bit too colorful though...kinda makes my head hurt :)

I'm convinced that "Head On" is a commercial completely backed by George Soros and aired only on Fox News to drive Conservatives out of their friggin' minds. I. HATE. THAT. COMMERCIAL!

Have you seen the Pepsi ad with the golden retriever stealing a sandwich to "Secret Agent Man"? That is great.

I would expect the Head-On commercial to be extremely effective. Its directly to the point, no flash, nothing to distract.

"I HATE THE GEICO COMMERCIALS! THEIR COMMERCIALS ARE SO IRRITATING THAT GEICO AND THEIR ADVERTISING AGENCY DESERVE TO GO BANKRUPT! /rant"

The only thing that could have made it worse than that English accent for the gecco would be if they had him speaking Spanish, with English sub-titles.

I can't stand the yahoo's they have on the golf commentaries who have the English accents saying "a delictable little chip shot" or " a tasty little left to right down-hill breaker" or a "scrumptious sand save".....is it just me?

I also hate advertisements on TV and Rado that repeat the phone number three or more times.

1-800-555-8970
1-800-555-8970
1-800-555-8970

If I’m interested I will get it the first time or at most the second time. If I miss it I will wait for the next time it is presented.

Somewhere in “commercial presentation school”, someone has suggested that “three times is the charm” and now it is the general dictate for all advertisement. Head-on is prime example of this premise.

My all time favorite is the Geico commercial with the Cavemen.

No doubt. I am in hopes that a movie featuring them is in the offing. "I'll have the roast duck with mango salsa."
Just too funny.

Haven't seen that one either (on Fox News or ESPN). Guess I need to watch a greater range of channels to see some good commercials.

The drug company commercials are the most annoying, especially when the innumerable side effects are listed at blinding speed, taking up at least half the (occasionally 2 minute) ad.
[Insert drug here] is effective in treating [insert relatively annoying inconvienience here (like fidgeting in class or fear of European cars)]

"while the gecko schtick is starting to run out of ideas."

Even Bacharach throws in the "Lizard licks his eyeball" line.

While everyone is pitching in, here's one of my least favorite campaigns - that Tony St. Clare for Tangueray Gin. He damn near drives me to drink Red Stripe and like it!
